Speedy deletion nomination of Sør-Fron Church

edit

Hello Erik den yngre,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Sør-Fron Church for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks, Anastasia (talk) 20:15, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Churches in Norway

edit

Thanks for making an excellent start on this topic. I really enjoyed reading your introduction. I was wondering whether it would be useful to add more details of the interiors, especially perhaps the carved altarpieces and pulpits from the Medieval period. I believe a number of Norwegian churches also have frescos from the same period. Maybe also a word about more recent developments in religious art.--Ipigott (talk) 09:16, 20 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your feedback. You are right, this is just a start. Topics that should be added include style (period), design (floor plan), decoration details (interior, exterior), and materials/technique (important topic in Norway). Some of this is already covered in other articles on English WP (I will copy and paste), other topics need to be translated. When more topics and details are added, the article needs more structure (headings). --Erik den yngre (talk) 09:36, 20 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
And thanks for copy-editing, that was really needed! --Erik den yngre (talk) 09:42, 20 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
For the architectural features, you might be inspired by Church architecture in Scotland although I can see from your Norwegian and English articles on the octagonal churches you have a pretty good idea of where you are going. I also liked your Korkskirker I Norge. Maybe you could put it into English as Norwegian cross-shaped churches. Personally, I find these top down articles extremely useful. I have written a number myself, for example Architecture of Denmark (which also has quite a bit about the churches) and Church frescos in Denmark. If you would like any help with your English articles, just let me know. Interesting to see you are from Sogn og Fjordane. About a dozen years ago, I was involved in a project with the archivists there who were putting lots of interesting stuff on the internet.--Ipigott (talk) 15:49, 20 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for very useful ideas. Top-down articles are very useful, but also difficult to write as it is easy to get lost in details (articles about single buildings are much easier). A good, reliable source that provides an overview of such a wide topic is a good starting point. Please let me know if you know about sources or other articles on WP. Cross-country skiing

edit

Hi Erik, with your and User: Cornellier's assent, I would move the Talk:Cross-country skiing/sandbox into Cross-country skiing. Please let me know at the talk page. User:HopsonRoad 21:15, 21 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Erik, I did some cleanup of the Terminology section of the article to make the language more idiomatic. I added and subtracted some definite articles. You might want to check that I didn't alter the original sense of translated material. More importantly, do you mean "shooting at a target while skiing at top speed," literally? In modern biathlon, one stops to shoot. These words suggest that one shoots on the move, like cowboys in Westerns! Cheers, User:HopsonRoad 17:21, 28 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the source clearly says "downhill race with shooting at target at top speed". The accompanying drawing shows soldiers aiming rifles at target while gliding downhill on skis. --Erik den yngre (talk) 17:26, 28 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
@HopsonRoad: Thanks for the cleanup, but some words are direct quotes from the original, so I reversed those changes. --Erik den yngre (talk) 17:35, 28 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Could you please specify why you reverted my edit on Oslo?

  • The ref "Redaksjon (August 2012). "Fire ganger mer krim i Oslo enn i New York". Osloby.no (in Norwegian). Retrieved 28 August 2012." is calling for the date parameter two times, and it needed to be removed.
  • I'm quite certain that every municipality article about Norway on wikipedia needs to specify the language form.
  • And the pronunciation, you stated in your revertion unsourced removal of IPA, when the IPA didn't have a source in the first place. Could you please explain why you reverted my edit?

Translation

edit

Hi Erik, The Cross-country skiing (sport) article gives a translation, as follows: "In Norwegian, langrenn refers to 'competitive skiing where the goal is to complete a specific distance in groomed tracks in the shortest possible time.'" Since grooming in English implies a machine and the term, langrenn, predated grooming, would it not be more accurate to say, "In Norwegian, langrenn refers to 'competitive skiing where the goal is to complete a specific distance in pre-set tracks in the shortest possible time'"? Sincerely, User:HopsonRoad 03:55, 10 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

I think that is fair. In Norwegian we used the word løype or spor. Noun løype corresponds to verb løpe (to run, slide or hike) and means a ski-trail or ski-path (used for all kinds of skiing, not XC specific). Whereas spor means trace or track and refers to the visible markings left by a skier in snow. In some dialects or old Norwegian there was also the word låm (lom) = løype, combined with sla (english: slope) gave the international word slalom ("ski trail on a slope"). --— Erik Jr. 10:33, 10 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Birkebeinerrennet

edit

Hi Erik, I've commented out material from your last edit at Cross-country skiing (sport) , which is not supported by the ref. The Birkebeinerrennet site says "Men 85 years and older". The ref is about a single individual. I feel that this level of detail belongs more properly at the Birkebeinerrennet or Worldloppet Ski Federation articles. Sincerely, User:HopsonRoad 15:37, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

@HopsonRoad: Well they did actually have a class 90+ that year for the 94 year old gentlemen. These details are examples to show what "age groups" and "open to the public" really means. Readers not familiar with Birkebeiner or Vasaloppet may not understand. My intention was not go into details about particular races. --— Erik Jr. 15:44, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Wording

edit

Hi Erik, I don't understand your sentence in X-C (sport): "Competition also takes place within classes or age groups," Specifically, what are "classes" as distinct from "age groups"? There is nothing in the references in English that support this. I also find it awkward that some material is supported by references in Norsk in this English article—it's a little hard to verify material or to read further with such material. Cheers, User:HopsonRoad 22:21, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about that. There are typically an elite group (or class, defined by previous performance) as well as age groups (dont know if class is the appropiriate term in English). So there is an overall winner and winners by age groups. There is also a medal to everyone that completes within a specified time for each class. And I guess also a diploma for everyone that completes. This distinguishes "turrenn" from ordinary XC. Details vary but as far as I know the basic set up is the same for the major once like Vasaloppet and Marcialonga. --— Erik Jr. 23:28, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Kiandra snow shoe club reference needed

edit

Hi Erik, can you supply a reference for "Skiers at Kiandra used wax made from oil, rubber or fat to increase downhill speed, it is not clear if these methods were invented there or imported from California" at Kiandra snow shoe club? Cheers, User:HopsonRoad 03:50, 29 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

It's Vaage 1952 as shown in the text. --— Erik Jr. 09:50, 29 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Erik, thanks for the new material at Kiandra snow shoe club. Two questions:

  1. Does Andersen shed light on the founding date of the club?
  2. When you say the Andersen "believes that Jens Olsen was one of the founders of the Kiandra Snow Shoe Club", is that speculation on his part or did he see documentation?

Sincerely, User:HopsonRoad 14:34, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Andresen writes (translated): "it is said that Jens Olsen and his friends founded the ski club". So it is very vague, and he does not refer to specific documentation, although the entire book is based on letters from emigrants (and interviews with living relatives). It seems like this Jens Olsen also used the name James Holston. He married Margaret Carter from Scotland. They had residences in Providence and Adaminaby at the lake. Jens Olsen died in 1926. --— Erik Jr. 14:45, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Your revert on Norway

edit

Hello. I have reverted your edit since the text that I removed, and you re-added, has nothing to do with the etymology of "Norway"/"Norwegians" but is about the etymology of the word Norman ("Normand" in French), and thus doesn't belong in the article. Especially since it can make readers believe that everything referred to as Norman/Normand refers to Norway and Norwegians. And we have problems enough with editors believing that everything that refers to Norse/Norseman is about Norway exclusively, instead of all Germanic-speaking Scandinavians, i.e. also Danes and Swedes, and thus claiming that everything that was Norse was exclusively Norwegian. - Tom | Thomas.W talk 12:28, 3 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

I dont necessarily disagree about the substance, but removing text is not the most constructive way forward. Better to tag the relevant sentence or paragraph as "disputed", then can be removed or rephrased based on discussion. I am trying to consult sources, and origin and usage of "Norsemen" is less clear than you suggest. Let us hurry slowly. --— Erik Jr. 14:06, 3 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

I note your complaint about IP vandalism on the article. Another admin noted the edits are not inherently vandalism. This is a case where dispute resolution may be in order. However, and as I have warned the other user, you must not engage in an edit war and continue to revert the changes. Instead of reverting, please discuss the situation with the editor(s) involved and try to reach a consensus on the talk page.

If editors, yourself included, continue to revert to their preferred version they are likely to be blocked from editing Wikipedia. This isn't done to punish an editor, but to prevent the disruption caused by edit warring. In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Edit warring on Wikipedia is not acceptable in any amount, and violating the three-revert rule is very likely to lead to a block. N.J.A. | talk 18:49, 10 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

I know about the 3R rule. On Norwegian WP the 3R rule does however not apply to obvious vandalism or trolling. This case would count as obvious vandalism on NO WP as nobody would regard this as a content dispute. But I tried avoid 3R by reporting the behavior. --— Erik Jr. 18:54, 10 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
The 3R rule is treated similarly here. I reviewed your complaint (as did another admin before me) and we both felt AIV is inappropriate. AIV is for serious and urgent vandalism issues and not a discussion about an editor. Possibly the edits are trolling, but it’s not obvious as such as of now in my view. Review the policy and explore the forums set out therein to discuss the editor or issue in a proper forum. Best of luck. N.J.A. | talk 19:09, 10 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
@NJA: Thanks for respons. Even if this is not serious vandalism, it is obviously not a content dispute, it is plain trolling. Is Finland a country in Africa? Of course not. I reverted instantly because I did not want this nonsense to remain in the article. Discussing this nonsense with the contributor is futile. This process is very frustrating. Some facts are simply too clear to merit discussion. — Erik Jr. 19:17, 10 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

...or rather adding an HQ image of high resolution that just become awarded in WLM Norway? are you then rather the one who is going to pickup up HQ images from Commons and bring them here? --Poco2 18:52, 2 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

The photo is of such high quality that persons are recognizable, I think we should avoid that, particularly when photos are from a private occasion. Can you please please blur faces slightly? --— Erik Jr. 19:07, 2 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
