Emperor or Tennō
/Eikyō 永享 1429Why did you go through and change all of the Japanese emperor succession boxes so that they say "Emperor or Tennō: XYZ" rather than just "Emperor XYZ"?-Jefu 08:41, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- Assume good faith≠ Jefu-san. Ooperhoofd 10:00, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- Ooperhoofd: Jefu asked an honest question, one that I have been wondering for a while too. He was not rude nor did he accuse you of anything wrong. I made a similar comment in the past: [1]. Your response was [2], which may be a response to Jefu's question as well. You asked what the harm was and to wait, and I have. I still question the value of suffixing Tennō to everything, but I will continue to wait in good faith. (I recommend keeping a talk archive rather than blanking your screen every once in a while.) Bendono 10:44, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
The problem is he didn't add a tennō "suffix" to all their names, which would have been more acceptable (It is far less common but not unheard of to refer to the Japanese emperors as "XYZ Tenno", with or without the macron), he added a tennō prefix, which isn't even correct in Japanese. In any event, I think the change is completely unnecessary, particularly because it is difficult to include both styles in an info box without it looking awkward. Mention of the word tennō is already included in the first sentence of each article, where it is more appropriate.-Jefu 11:34, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- Bendonno-san: I simply want to work together with others to help the project improve. In Jefu-san's straightforward question, I see at least three distinct elements, two of which are legitimate areas of inquiry -- one having to do with succession boxes and the other having to do with the utility of "tennō" in an English-language context.
- It's that awkward third part of this question which troubles me. Despite the fact that I'm pleased to accept your implied offer of help in grappling with valid issues, I'm persuaded that any query from Jefu-san is naught but a feint. All I've heard thus from from him is that he doesn't want me to play in his sandbox and my truck isn't as good as his truck. Pretty basic stuff, but I've taken away only one lesson from two bad encounters: I might as well say or do nothing, because it's all about a sand box and some trucks. I'd prefer being wrong, of course; and I agree that mine quickly devolves into a pretty cramped point-of-view, but that's what I'm taking away from all this. For today, I feel kinda burned and reluctant to write more about even something which interests me a priori.
- On the other hand, the impetus for creating Nihon odai ichiran was fueled in part by the frustration, impatience and annoyance Jefu-san engendered. My problem today is that I haven't quite recovered from yesterday. I haven't developed a strategy for discussing the two parts of this question which I identify as worthwhile. I can't figure out how to learn from whatever went right with LordAmeth and how to avoid whatever went wrong with Jefu-san. The only place I feel on solid ground is within this plagiarized sentence: "I simply want to work together with others to help the project improve." Ooperhoofd 12:59, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Please respond soon, otherwise I'm inclined to go ahead and change them back.-Jefu 13:10, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Okay, I see you've started changing them back. Thank you. And I actually like the "Emperor of Japan: XYZ" better than what it used to be. Actually, I like the succession boxes that someone added to the most recent emperor articles best, if you are inclined to go through and change them all anyway.-Jefu 13:19, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
