Note edit

Attacking other editors could lead to an effort to get you banned from the ref desks. If you have an issue with a user, take it to their own talk page... as noted in the ref desk talk page recently. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 11:11, 27 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

RD Captchas edit

Captchas won't work on the Reference Desk as you suggested. It should be obvious now that Wikipedia's Captcha system doesn't work. New accounts are created in an automated fashion, automating the Captcha, and then random edits are made to make the account a fully usable account. Previously, dozens of socks held in reserve were used just to demonstrate that they exist. This is obviously being done on purpose. I wonder how long it will take for users to realize who is behind it. If it is who I think it is, I don't expect it to last forever. It is just a proof of concept for a tool to attack Wikipedia. 216.59.42.36 (talk) 13:55, 31 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

speakers humming edit

Such humming is usually caused by Ground loops. See the discussion at that article. 173.228.123.166 (talk) 00:28, 6 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Reference desk post moved edit

Hi, I moved your post at the Science reference desk to the Computing reference desk, as that's more appropriate. It can now be found at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing § Battery eliminator for smartphones? You will likely get more people familiar with the topic there. The computing desk is for electronics in general, not just personal computers, as you can see on the refdesk home page. No offense meant; I'm just trying to be helpful. Have a good day! --47.146.63.87 (talk) 05:50, 5 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents edit

There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. 138.97.116.190 (talk) 13:39, 28 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

I've seen your response to the accusation of socking at ANI. I'd like you to elaborate on what entitles you to have multiple accounts. You allude to privacy concerns. Therefore, I suggest you e-mail me and explain those concerns. Also, if there are accounts for which you lost the passwords, please name them. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 19:26, 28 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
For me the issue was settle per [1] --Doroletho (talk) 13:09, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
It's not settled as far as I'm concerned. If you don't e-mail me with a clear explanation, your accounts risk being blocked.--Bbb23 (talk) 14:12, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
If you want to drag me into some sockpuppet investigation, just do it. I'm not aware of having broken any wiki-rule, if I did, I'm willing to look at the evidence of what it is and change my behavior.--Doroletho (talk) 18:04, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
As a CheckUser, I've already investigated, and I see no legitimate need for you to have multiple accounts. That's why I asked you to e-mail me. If you don't wish to, then I'll block all the accounts except this one.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:21, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm fine with that. If you believe it's a huge issue, then, go on and block all the others. I assume that if I'm on vacation and create a 'burner' account for a couple of days that won't be an issue though. Doroletho (talk) 19:26, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Why is it necessary to create an account when you're on vacation?--Bbb23 (talk) 20:22, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
If you are using a shared computer (which I do like 1/4 of the time, not only vacs but also biz trips) anyone would be using the same IP as me. Or I would be contributing with the IP of some company, which has nothing to do with my contributions. Sometimes it's not just our own privacy, but the privacy of the others. Doroletho (talk) 20:32, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Here's what I suggest. Create a single account that you reuse for trips and declare it as an alternative account. That's what others do.--Bbb23 (talk) 20:44, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
OK, that will do. I didn't realise it was such an issue. After all, I'm not disrupting the flow of it.
Anyway, I hope now the issue is settled. Happy new year for you.Doroletho (talk) 21:05, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Happy New Year to you too.--Bbb23 (talk) 22:30, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Kharon edit

I assume that this, this or something connected with them relate to the incident to which Kharon referred at Wikipedia talk:Reference desk. You will have seen by now that I have gone to bat for you at AN/I and the Reference desk Talk page, primarily on principle; I hope that won't prove to have been a mistake. The attacks at the links are only just short of ad hominem attacks, and are certainly uncivil. General Ization Talk 21:19, 28 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Reminder edit

If you are going to use undisclosed undisclosed secondary accounts it is your responsibility to ensure you comply with our WP:SOCK policy. In the discussion you linked to, the issue of you using an undisclosed secondary account to initiate discussion on another editor concerning their behaviour on the RD was not something that seems to have been considered. So it's irrelevant to the appropriateness of you doing so. I have therefore closed the discussion you initiated. I'm sure you making a mistake this time is fine assuming that's all you did do, so there's no point discussing it further. But you remain forbidden from any violations of our WP:SOCK policy and it is your responsibility, and no one else's, to ensure you do not violate it. If you are at all unsure you need to seek clarification and not rely on some random ANI thread as absolving you from any responsibility to comply with our WP:SOCK policy. P.S. I just noticed Bbb23 seems to be treating this as your main account. If that is the case, then my specific concerns are addressed. As I'm not a CU, I have no idea what's going on. If you say that this is your main account then I will accept that but since your response was to treat the ANI thread as somehow resolving the issue when it didn't actually deal with it, the only real solution I saw was to close the thread which you initiated as my assumption was, based on your own disclosure, you were forbidden from initiating such a discussion. Note as I said that given the greater importance of participating in community processes for someone who edits articles, my assumption would be that any account which edits the encyclopaedia proper should be your main account, not one mostly used for the RD regardless of how you personally feel or the level of use of such accounts. Nil Einne (talk) 10:56, 3 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

BTW, in case you're still confused I'll put it a different way. There was no administrative action required since I don't think the concerns I have are enough to warrant a block. While ANI is sometimes used for advice or for warnings, this isn't really the purpose of ANI especially since barring the special case of discretionary sanctions, a warning or advice from administrators carries no special weight. It's true that an administrator can block an editor, but their block needs to be justified and if it is, then in theory any administrator would make such a block when the case is brought up in an appropriate place by someone else. So closing that thread was appropriate. But you were later warned by me about why you initiating and participating in that discussion was likely inappropriate per WP:SOCK. Perhaps it was better for me to raise the issue directly with you but since you made the disclosure at WT:RD and there was already discussion about it at WT:RD, I felt it better to continue it there. There was no point me continuing or reopening the ANI as I did not feel any administrative action was needed at the time. I was simply telling you my concerns and what I felt you should do because of them. If you are sure my interpretation is wrong, you have 3 choices. You can continue to initiate or participate in discussions about Kharon, and risk being blocked or topic banned because it turns out I am right. Do not assume you will get much sympathy at ANI simply because that thread was initiated and then closed without action since you are required to follow our WP:SOCK policy and you were told by me about concerns over your compliance. Or you can seek clarification somewhere about the appropriateness of what you wish to do. (Probably not ANI or AN. Perhaps WP:VPP or WT:SOCK.) Or you can stop even if you think I'm wrong. I would recommend the later 2 as the first one wastes everyone's time. While I have sympathy for privacy concerns, for various reasons the community is always dubious about any use of undisclosed secondary accounts, especially in problem areas (which sadly the RD is), so you will find as much as the SOCK does allow the use of them, you're always going to encounter suspicion, concerns and maybe even removed comments and blocks when you do so to any great level. AGF can only go so far. Also as said above, for me you clarifying that this is your primary account as you don't have any other accounts you use to edit the encyclopaedia proper in any meaningful fashion would be sufficient to allay my concerns about you discussing Kharon (or any other editor). Note that I cannot speak for what's going on above, since it's not something I'm involved with. Nil Einne (talk) 11:25, 3 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your thorough message. My present situation right now is that I do not use any secondary account for any purpose, minor or not: neither to protect my privacy, nor to avoid using some company's IP, nor to avoid using my password in a shared computer.
I didn't create any secondary account to deceive, but now I understand that even then I'd need to link the secondary accounts, which I will, if I create some in the future for the purposes mentioned above.
