Thank you from a newbie

edit

First, thank you for your warm welcome to Wikipedia.

This is my first contribution so I am a little nervous and hesitant about what I am doing.

I am waiting to insert a photo of the Knoxville flag tomorrow when the 4 day waiting period is over for new users. It is a photo of a city flag that I personally took Monday. There should not be any issues with its usage. Once the photo is inserted, then I will go and link my page to several other Wikipedia pages. I figure more people would want to see the Knoxville flag itself than reading a description of it.

Secondly, I do have a question to ask you.

On Monday, I also contacted the curator of the Univ of Tennessee McClung Museum Collection who has sent me a jpeg of the original 1896 sketch by the artist himself of the Knoxville flag. In her email, the curator gave me permission to use the image as long as I gave proper credit to the McClung collection. The curator wrote a one sentence credit to use. So, do you think that will be something Wikipedia will really allow or will the documentation of permission be too cumbersome?

I was told that original work (your own photograph or artwork) is best. But as an experienced editor, I didn’t know if I should even try to use the museum artwork.

Lastly, I went to your page and it appears that you might be from TN. My family has lived in East TN for 8 generations and thinks it is the best place in the US.

Anyway, thank you for your kindness and for any advice you might give to me.Dkitts (talk) 16:58, 9 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi again, Dkitts! To answer your questions:
There should be no problems uploading the photo you took. As for the other, you'll have to provide the permission from the curator, but as long as you do it should be fine as well. If it's from the 1800s, it shouldn't be under copyright anyway, which is what Wikipedia is concerned about. You may have to send an email or something confirming that you have permission, but I'm not sure about that. It should be OK to upload.
Yes, it's a good idea to link to other appropriate pages, both within the flag article and other articles. I did a few links in your created article so you can see how it goes.
Sadly, I'm not from Tennessee, although I am from the south and I've spent a lot of time there (mostly in the Smokies/around Pigeon Forge and Sevierville). I'm hoping to be able to move there someday. White Arabian Filly Neigh 20:42, 9 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

When does an article stop being listed as orphan?

edit

I have related this article to 6 other articles that logically connect to the Flag of Knoxville one. How many more must be connected until the orphan article label is removed? Dkitts (talk) 14:36, 13 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
