IP sock?

It seems to me that 98.196.233.155 is block-evading sock of SkepticAnonymous/98.196.234.69, a user/IP that you recently blocked. Could you please take a look (checkuser?) and take any administrative action you think is necessary? Thank you. Peacock (talk) 13:45, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

New Pages update

Hey AmandaNP/Archives/2012/May :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As the enwiki page notes, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.

On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our Engagement Strategy on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).

On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup here. A stripped-down version of this should be ready to deploy fairly soon after the list view is; I'm afraid I don't have precise dates yet. When I have more info, or can unleash everyone to test the list view, I'll let you know :). As always, any questions to the talkpage for the project or mine. Thanks! Question

As you know I have an interest in the whole sockpuppetry thing. I was thinking of applying to be a trainee so I could get a firmer grasp of how it all works, would this be possible? Darkness Shines (talk) 15:36, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

It is possible for you to apply to become a clerk. You are subject to a consensus on the clerk team before it goes through, and you will need someone to train you. I currently have Keilanna so I won't be able to take up that task, if it goes through. I'm not sure becoming a clerk is the best move at the moment, but I fail to see another idea that would get you the same level of training. It's up to you if you do want to apply, but there are no official restrictions stopping you from becoming one. Your original restrictions would still apply though even if you do gain clerkship. But at that point of passing training, you can talk to me or the SPI team collectively, and we'll probably have enough evidence to clear the restrictions. Hope this helps, and never hesitate to stop by my talkpage for SPI or sockpuppet help. -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 01:36, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Unblock request

Hi. As a result of Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/TreyAU21/Archive, a number of registered editors and IPs were blocked, and one of the IPs is requesting an unblock. I think this one perhaps has a valid case for unblock, and I've commented further at User talk:214.13.69.132. Abuse response

Hey, I just noticed you're one of the list admins of the Enwiki abuse response mailing list. Can you decide on User:Puffin's nomination, and subscribe him/her to the mailing list if necessary? Thanks! Lynch7 18:47, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Hey Mike, it's actually been quite a while since I've participated in the project, but you are correct I am a list admin (probably the only one lurking around). I personally normally leave it up to the project to close the nomination, but if you would like me to I can still close it. I usually do ask the IP quiz as others do just so we know they will contact the right people, if you want I can put that up, or feel free to just close it. And I'm not sure how active the team is there, but I've only seen 4 cases hit the list in the past few months, is there still a requirement to send contact to the list? And the most important question of all, has anyone gotten a response? :D -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 18:58, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Same here, its been a while since I've been to Abuse response. I don't know, I guess Puffin is sensible enough not to mess things up, Quiz or no Quiz, I'd be fine either way. Considering that many of our mails go out to large ISPs, I'd be surprised if we ever got a response; I guess its no longer worth investigating an IP's contribs and taking the pains to mail the ISP about it. Misbehaving

JDamanWP (talk · contribs) always revert well sourced contents in List of 2012 Summer Olympics broadcasters without any prove that he is right to do so and also in-civil in Talk:List of 2012 Summer Olympics broadcasters, is that any misbehaving incur? Also in UEFA Euro 2012 broadcasting rights, until today, he still insist his point. --Aleenf1 14:10, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Actually calling JDamanWP a hypocrite is real close to making a personal attack. JDamanWP saying "I'm getting pretty sick and tired of you're know-it-all attitude!" is just someone who is frustrated at the argument, or maybe more specifically you. While that might not be helpful to the discussion, it is definitely not something I can block for. Now what you guys have is an edit dispute. Edit warring is starting and if I am still to act in an administrative capacity, I can't go in and say who is right and who is wrong with sources. If you want me to get involved, then you have to understand I will not be taking any further administrative action in this matter (because I would be involved). In the mean time, the latter page is protected on edit warring. -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 01:12, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Teramo

Hello DQ, can you please give it a look at what’s happening on this page? This user Attilios, with his own endless records of verbal threats, edit wars and reverts, keeps on reverting the article to his very personal version, abruptly deleting the work of many throughout the years. It’s been one and a half years now carrying out his arrogant censorship... Thank you. DDF19483 (talk) 17:26, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

I took a quick look and have no preliminary comment, but I will take a look a little later. -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 01:17, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, he has started reverting my talk page now, no wonder you had already blocked him in the past... can you take measures again. Greetings. DDF19483 (talk) 18:24, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

There is a related discussion at User talk:EdJohnston#Teramo, where User:Attilios has posted. This appears to be a contest as to who can behave the worst. The one who can write better is calling the other party a troll and both are resisting all nudges toward WP:Dispute resolution. EdJohnston (talk) 18:41, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
Being an experienced Wikipedia editor, I've several of such situations in my experience. The matter had been solved before with the other (one who cares only of Teramo page and has zero knowledge of Wikipedia formats, practice etc) being blocked and the page set to my version. If you check well, my version started as a Wikipedization of the other's one which was Wiki-0, was full of bad formattation, images placed wrongly, etc. All started when he deleted back all my additions, and that's all, finishing with him insulting at full speed (that's likely why he keeps deleting his talk page) and being blocked. Anyway, I'm open to a solution and to what you'll decide. Ciao and good work. --'''Attilios''' (talk) 18:49, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi DQ, I am only to clarify that I had even decided to quit this dispute and rise above User:Attilios' censorship and ignorance by stopping editing the article in hand. Unfortunately his boredom leads him to keep on reverting my talk page. Please also consider User:Attilios' abuses on my talk page going on for more than 1 year now. Also consider his attack to my person, asking other users such User:Johnbod to espouse his personal violence towards me, something that of course he refused to do. I feel I have the right to express the level of verbal and violent intimidation towards me has now become intolerable and I've just realized many wikipedia users out there have experienced the same thing. By all the performances he has given throughout the years we can readily classify User:Attilios' as a vandal Italian troll with low English skills, hard to understand why he sticks around en. Wikipedia. His behavior of a populist dictator, his arrogance of a low-accomplished censor led you already to block him in the past. He seems to collect a huge record of edit wars and blocks. His attempts to prevail over me by recruiting other users to his cheap revolution along with his verbal threats that is before everyone's eyes, are proof that his fanaticism is out in the open. That's all for me. Thank you for your attention to the issue.DDF19483 (talk) 23:49, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

I personally see this as a user dispute, and I see 1-3 comments each as of recently that make both of you deserve a warning, and I see on EdJohnston's talkpage where Attilios got a warning. I think you can both consider your final warnings for attacks to have been issued, and any further ones will result in a block. Now I wouldn't call what was done "censorship". To merge things down, which is looking like what was done, is not going to kill animals. On the other hand it may not be the best idea, I didn't personally read through the whackload of text changed. I would recommend each of you on the talkpage go back and for line by line (I know it's a lot) talking your concerns out, and coming to a mutual agreement that way. Let me know if you need further help working things about, but again to both of you, watch how you approach each other. Also thanks Ed for stopping by. -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 00:54, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Even though I quit editing the article, Attilios keeps on reverting my talk page. Can you do something about that at least? this vandal can't help trolling around. DQ, I came to your talk page cos, provided that I can have a say, I don't consider User:EdJohnston any use to solve this dispute. In 1 and a half years nothing has changed, he hasn't raised any solution or strived to end the dispute by making both parts reach a consensus. User:EdJohnston I'm still awaiting explanations why any of Attilio's broken English reverts is justified on the contrary any revert of mine is a block threat from you. Mind you that I'm not saying it is right or wrong, I'm just saying that you should give explanations. Keep in mind that Attilios, who can barely speak simple English, is also reverting the work of many other users throughout the years. Nobody had ever complained about the article up until this illiterate troll arrived. Reverting and deleting is all he does on Wikipedia. DQ any decisions you may make will be well accepted. Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles.

Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! She has copy-edited over 1567 articles during these drives, and surpassed the 1,000,000-word mark on May 5. On to the second million! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg

Hey all :). A notification that the prototype for the New Pages Feed is now live on enwiki! We had to briefly take it down after an unfortunate bug started showing up, but it's now live and we will continue developing it on-site.

The page can be found at Special:NewPagesFeed. Please, please, please test it and tell us what you think! Note that as a prototype it will inevitably have bugs - if you find one not already mentioned at the talkpage, bring it up and I'm happy to carry it through to the devs. The same is true of any additions you can think of to the software, or any questions you might have - let me know and I'll respond.

I would generally agree with you, and personally, I do think anything that says "bot" where bot is not clearly used in another meaning should not be used. Though the last time this came up (not the specific username) it was noted that there is no R-Bot, R-Bot1, R-Bot2, etc. and the community at the time decided to leave it alone. It's a discretion call, whether you want to AGF or not. There is no right or wrong here. -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 12:37, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Proxy block

Just edit conflicted with you on the 182. block, however, there's a ton of edits from this range (Mughal Lohar and Sridhar100 both use it in addition to a couple of others). I'm not comfy with identifying proxies etc, can you take a look at the history of Shah Jahan and Mughal Empire and see if there's more to the proxy range? cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 12:10, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

So they all came back   Unlikely IP is an open proxy, and why I say unlikely is because Pakistan and other middle eastern/asian countries have a lot of issues with network overcrowding and highly dynamic IPs, so someone who really wanted to attack a site would have several piles of IPs to use. There is also proxies, but they are usually as obvious as they pop up in google. I didn't run a full check on all of them, only the basic checks to see if there is a chance that there is a proxy, but I think your going to come back with nothing. Could their be a proxy? Absolutely. Are they active right now, or visible anywhere, not that I can see. Feel free to come back if you have the feeling that there is a proxy. -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 14:20, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Proxy unblock request on hold

Hello, DeltaQuad. There's a request at User talk:PrezKennedy for an unblock of an IP range that you blocked as a proxy. (Here is a listing of the block.) The user claims to be using Remote Desktop Protocol, and not an open proxy. I am aware that we tend to treat editing via web hosts the same as editing via open proxies, but it does look to me as though this may be a legitimate use. However, since you are apparently much more knowledgeable on these matters than I am, perhaps you can assess the request. JamesBWatson (talk) 19:11, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Any legitimate uses for using a webhost, are an automatic deferral to IPBE. This is the best way to handle it, so we don't have socks/vandals finding, or obtaining websites (from other IPs on the range), and then using that IP to edit. If your asking about the validity of the RDP argument, I can't really go through a /18 to see if there is technical evidence that this is occuring, I don't have the IP address at all, so it makes a needle in a haystack. The work block comment is an often occurrence, but I would encourage a question as to whether it's a block, or rules that is affecting him (not that it will really matter much in the end). The spirit of IPBE is out there for those who genuinely can't edit because of a policy preventing them, but we do encourage at home edits. Hope this helps and don't hesitate to comment on my assessment of this or ask a question. I'm also considering making a webhost template, so we don't use the open proxy template -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 03:55, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

Question

Is this what editing from a webhost looks like?[3] No ISP just 188.28.178.78.threembb.co.uk? I have never seen that before so am perplexed. Darkness Shines (talk) 12:59, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) It's not a webhost, it's actually a mobile broadband provider. The name of the IP address isn't usually terribly useful in figuring out who it belongs to, particularly when there's no website at threembb.co.uk to tell you what the company is. When you dig deep enough, though, you find out that "three" is a UK mobile broad band ("mbb") provider. There's no one way to determine whether something is an ISP or webhost... it generally involved sleuthing unique to each case to figure out who the owner is. Account creation through rangeblock

Hey DQ. What if a school is covered by a /16 rangeblock that is marked as a schoolblock. Should that count as a regular school block, and it's OK to create an account, or must it be deferred to checkusers? Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 15:09, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

I assume this is about ACC #77003. Well with this particular block, it's interesting because a whole whack load of schools are covered by this. It wouldn't hurt, and probably is best to defer to a CU for them to look, but my gut feeling as normal is there just going to turn it back saying "your guess is as good as mine" or similar. I say this because if the block was to stop an IP hopping user, then that's a valid CU deferral reason. But then most school computers look the same by user agent, and by IP, so a CU can't do anything. Hope this helps. -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 17:03, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
