Unfortunately, these boxes on the Hindi wiki's main page are dependent upon the font size of the browser for their dimensions. Btw, could you plz tell me what vertical and horizintal distances are you talking about? I could still try.Cygnus_hansa 22:51, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Glossary of terms in Hinduism edit

Hi Deepak, I know you are busy in writing Ladakh and you are doing a great job btw but I have to ask some questions about this list. I am trying to make it a FL, I have completed all the blanks and need to cite references now. However, I am not sure if the glossary is detailed enough. It is fairly big but there are many devs/devis/philosophic terms and other terms not listed there which should be. The problem is that the list may become too big. Do you think I should split it into sections such as "deities," "philosophy" etc. or split it into different pages so there is for example Glossary of terms in Hindu philospohy etc. or another method is to split it up like the spirituality list which is alphabetical. Best wishes for Ladakh. GizzaChat © 09:38, 7 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Images edit

While browsing for Ladakh images, have you come across (and remember) any good source of images of Darjeeling? I just moved that article to PR. Some images have been deleted from the commons (I got the permission from authors, and the images will be re-inserted in the article after I upload those in Wikipedia). Ladakh has so many magnificent images!! I wish we had at least some for Darjeeling :( Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 03:06, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I did some browsing through FlickR and collected some images. However, except a few (those were used in the article, now have been deleted and will be there in the article soon) none was comparable to those in Ladakh. Really, Ladakh has GREAT images. By the way, have a look in Darjeeling and leave some comments in the PR, as you feel necessary.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:30, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Indian art edit

I found your name among prominent WikiProject Hinduism contributors, so I thought I would ask you this. A relative of mine recently attended a thread ceremony of a coworker of hers, and each guest got this trinket as sort of a "party favor" - I wanted to know if it has any religious significance or if it's just art. It looks like a small table - it's a metal square about 15 cm x 15 cm. At each corner there are short legs, the ends of which resemble the paws of an animal. The design on the surface of the square consists of a four-sided shape where each side looks like the dome of the Taj Mahal. The shape is blue, the background is white, and the whole thing is covered with blue, green, red and gold leaves and flowers. It says "Shree Charbhuja" on the bottom, which I assume is the name of the store that made it. Thanks for your help, DLandTALK 06:29, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Inote edit

Inote or invisible notes are used for inline referencing. Syntax {{inote|http://www.wikipedia.org|wikipedia-1}}. cite.php is preferred by many these days as the disadvantage of inotes is that it not very visible. Use a healthy mix. =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:53, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

SVG images edit

I see what's wrong with this image: Image:Ladakhtemp.svg. You've embedded a raster image with it and tried to upload the embedded image. That's why it's not redering correctly. This is the correct procedure:

  • Import the image to a new document.
  • Upscale the raster version to about 1000px wide. Don't worry if it gets pixellated.
  • In the Document Preferences (SHIFT-CTRL-D), ensure that the page size is set to the image size.
  • Make a new layer
  • Cut the image, and paste it in the new layer. Align the image to fit correctly on the page. Lock the layer.
  • Make a new layer(s) and start tracing.
  • Once finished with the tracing, delete the locked layer which contains the image.
  • If you've used text, make sure that you select all textboxes and Unflow it. (SHIFT+CTRL+W)
  • Use only generic fonts such as Sans and Serif.

  1. Avoid loading images with English text to commons. Upload two images: The one in en: should be with English text, and a blank image of the same, with a pointer to en: goes to commons:
  2. Two maps on ladakh need to be svgfied. Are you up to it? Tip: To shade regions you would need to have a closed path.
  3. Criterion 2a is in the news on WT:FAC. Suggest you start looking for redundant phrases.

Re:Ladakh History edit

Yes, the deletion of so many names (and also further condensation) was good. It reads lucid now. I shall go through the Geography now and try to think any specific suggestion. A request: Please try to go through Darjeeling once, it is in Peer review now. I am not sure if I shall be able to attend suggestions in PR right away, as I am a bit busy now. However, the suggestions in PR will be taken care of soon. Also see if you want to change something there.--Dwaipayan (talk) 09:03, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ladakh geography edit

Ok, I read the Geography. Well, in gist, (please do not mind) it is very boring. The problem is while reading I could not visualise the whole thing. If you want to retain the section as it is now, a good map is necessary, that will point all notable places/ranges. Otherwise, it is becoming difficult to visualise. The first two paragrapha (geological origin) is ok. The second para ends with Zozila and Nunkun - ok. Then the problem starts.

  • "Suru and Zanskar valleys form a great trough at the foot of the northern, heavily glaciated flank of the Himalayas, while opposite rise the mountains of the Zanskar range" - very tough. I have some sort of gross idea of the geography there, still, I found it difficult. Opposite to what? I mean does it mean Zanskar is on south of the valley? And does Himalaya run north of the Ladakh totally? (well, Himalaya is to the south, but while reading it does not sound so) I mean till, say, Siachen? Or Himalaya ends somewhere just more northish-north-west? (Hope I am clear in voicing the point :) )
  • Does the region have a geographical boundary? I mean X range in the north, Y range to the west etc?
  • "The Suru river forms the western and northern boundary of the Zanskar range" - so what? What is the significance of Zanskar range? Is it a boundary of Ladakh? Or within Ladakh? Yes, Zanskar valley is within Ladakh, but the range?
  • "Zanskar consists of troughs of two rivers, the Stod (Doda) and the Lungnak (Tsarap Lingti). One of the Lungnak's main tributaries rises as the Tsarap far away to the east in Rupshu." - you mean Zanskar river - right? or the valley?
  • After reading the fourt paragraph, my impression is the river Zanskar is a river that is more or less parallel to Indus and after some meetings with other rivers, flows into Himachal Pradesh. The description is complex. In the next paragraph, it is clear that Zanskar river meets Indus. But iMO the complex description of all the tributaries of Zanskar is not good. See if that can be changed, or, better, can be removed - as those are making the complexity.
  • "Zanskar suffers heavy snowfall, and the Pensi-la opens only in June, and is blocked again in mid-October" - Zanskar river, valley or range?
  • "Within Ladakh it forms the northern boundary wall of the Indus valley, though when the river enters Ladakh at Demchok, some 250 km (155 mi) south-east of Leh, it is actually flowing along the foot of the northern flank of these granite mountains, which it crosses by a great gorge close to its confluence with the Hanle rive" ok. I think I could visualise this. The Indus forms the North boundary of Indus valley. However, initially, it is further north, even more north to the Ladakh range. And the river actually comes south of the range (and hence immediately north of the valley) only at the gorge. Right? It is difficult, very complex.
  • "Pang-gong range runs parallel to the Ladakh range some 100 km northwest from Chushul, along the southern shore of the Pang-gong Lake. It is divided from the main range by the Tangtse river." - what is the main range? Is there 2 Panggong ranges? One main and oone secondary? Or the main range refers to Ladakh range?
  • "The Shayok river rises just below the Karakoram Pass. The region comprising the valley of Shayok and Nubra rivers is known as Nubra. The Karakoram range in Ladakh is not as mighty as in Baltistan. North of the Karakoram lies the Kunlun. Thus, between Leh and eastern Central Asia, there is a triple barrier — Ladakh range, Karakoram range, and Kunlun. Nevertheless, a major trade route was established between Leh and Yarkand." - ok, this is ok. That could be visualised.

Well, I must say, I had the aforesaid observations by just reading, without any map. After that I saw a map (in the article Zanskar), when the things became slightly more clear. In gist, the language is very complex. And some minute details could be removed. More later. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 09:40, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for your note. Looks like a good article—I've edited quite a few India-related articles, and like doing so (despite the abuse I've endured recently from Blacksun concerning the IIT article).

But work is ramping up for me, so better after 30 June.

Ladakh map edit

Image:Ladakh1.svg borders on a copyvio. Remember, geographical boundaries are information, and information cannot be copyrighted. What is copyrighted are the map styles. Your map looks almost like a duplicate of the map. Try changing the styles, colours and details to make it as "original" as possible. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:27, 16 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I can barely read the text on Image:Ladakh2.svg. Suggest you use colours recommended by WikiProject Maps, use your own symbols, and remove unnecessary information. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nichalp (talkcontribs)

"The 2.99% figure is for Leh city (not district), and it comes from the 1981 census. It is useless ..."

Leh District .

Pls see that it is not for Leh city , but it is TEHSIL or DISTRICT. and 1981 census is not "useless" as you say. Ofcourse i will try to find the 2001 census but till then i will re- add the tag again.Bharatveer 12:01, 27 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • You have to leave a space between the opening and closing ref tags. That was causing the errors on the page. I've corrected them. Regards, thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK13:45, 27 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
"Citation needed" means that there is a statement in the article that is not supported by a reference, and it needs to be supported by citing its source. The statement for which you put that tag already has a citation. "Citation needed" tag cannot be used for missing information that you want in the article, but does not exist. I won't remove the tag right now because there's no point -- you might just put it back, but please try to learn proper use of tags. If you don't remove it by the time I clean up the article next, I'll have to do it myself".

I added the citation need tag for the "MISSING 5 % of the population" , for that your reference will not suffice. Pls see Citation. From that "If you see information that you believe needs a reference, your options include: Finding one (best) ;Failing that, either:Tagging with [citation needed] ,Moving unreferenced material to talk page with note asking for reference ,Asking editor who contributed material to provide a reference ,Removing the information ".

So providing bogus reference will not do. Since you have asked me to learn "proper" use of tags, In order to satisfy you i have added a different tag . Hope it helps. Bharatveer 15:41, 27 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
