Norman Clyde

Hi Cullen, I think it would be a good idea to wait until you check your contemporary newspaper articles before I did anything. I suspect that they are the source for the information from the book I referenced. When I read that section a year or so ago, I developed a memory that it was uncertain that Clyde had really shot at the car. When I reread it, I realized that I had exaggerated the chances that he had not shot at the car. If he did shoot at the car it shows a staggering lack of judgment and I would have thought that somebody that off might have had more difficulties with life than Clyde seems to have. But his life wasn't without issues along this line so it is not implausible that he really did aim and shoot at the car.

How did you come by the interest in Clyde? My first knowledge of the guy was when I saw my picture of the Chaney cabin had been used in the article about him. I was up at the Chaney cabin again last summer and mentioned it to somebody that we met there. It turned out that they guy, Doug Robinson, not only knew who Clyde was but he had met him. I joined the Sierra Club in 1976 and learned mountaineering through their classes and trips. Several of the middle aged, experienced climbers I met in those years had climbed with Clyde in their youth. One example was Jules Eichorn, one of the best climbers of the 1930s, who was with Clyde on the first ascent of the East Face of Mount Whitney in 1931. I spent two weeks at a Sierra Club mountaineering base camp with Jules in the Minarets in the late 1970s. I also spent two weeks on a similar climbing trip in the Palisades high above the Chaney cabin, where I did some of my toughest climbing, including Thunderbolt Peak and North Palisade. Though I don't climb as much these days (I am almost 59), I did hike to the summit of Mount Whitney in 2009 and climbed the West Face of Mount Shasta in 2007. I have written Wikipedia biographies of quite a few California mountaineers and Sierra Club leaders.

The Inyo Independent reported on November 3, 1928 that "a bullet from a revolver fired by Norman Clyde, principal of the high school, struck an automobile driven by Bill Fisk and occupied by a group of high school boys." Later, the story said that Clyde "has declined to make a formal statement" but according to "his version of the affairs", he fired two warning shots into the air, and "then fired at the wheel of one of the cars but the bullet glanced and hit the side of the car". This article was published less than four days after the incident, but Clyde's claim of firing just warning shots was published 45 years later in the Los Angeles Times, according to Robert Pavlik. We can't know exactly what happened that night, but I am almost certain that Norman Clyde put a bullet into that car. Whether it was malicious or accidental, we can't know. It is known that he was an excellent marksman.

In his biography of Clyde, Robert Pavlik referenced an article about Clyde's resignation a few days later, but didn't mention the November 3 article. Maybe he didn't find it. I found it in the Eastern California Museum when I was heading for Mount Whitney in 2009.

I have enormous respect for many of Norman Clyde's accomplishments. In a very real sense, he is one of my heroes. However, I think that it is pretty clear that he had a violent temper and some deep personality problems. Perhaps he transformed his negative drives into unusual pursuits.

Lancelets

Hi Dave. I agree with you that lancelets are interesting as precursors to fish and there should be mention of them in relevant fish articles. It would be good if you followed up your interest in them by adding something to Evolution of fish.
