Hello, Cscannell1, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Answering help request

edit

Hi, I saw your help request on my talk page. We have a training here on how to upload images to Wikimedia Commons so that they can be used in Wikipedia articles. A very important component of uploading images is ensuring that you have permission to use these photos. Wikimedia Commons can only accept images that are free to use.

That means that you must be the owner of an image (a photograph you took, in most instances, is acceptable), the image or work has expired copyright (created before 1924 in the US & other special rules), or the work was published with a copyright license that is compatible with Wikimedia Commons (CC-BY, CC0, & several others). Works of the US Federal Government (NASA, USGS, NPS, & others) are also public domain and acceptable to upload.

I encourage you to take the training so you can learn more about acceptable media for Commons. Thanks, Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:35, 28 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
