The culture - within tubes again

Courcelles, I guess it's time for a semi-permanent protect of The Culture page, within 11 hours of dumbot taking the protection off when it expired, our non-favorite sock is at the "within tubes" idiocy again. Aaah, thanks. Two months semi. Looks like blocking 86.128.0.0/16 would help, though there is one IP on 86.136 that throws it off, and I despise blocking /16's because of the huge potential for hitting the wrong target, the range is simply huge- and given it is BT, the range is actually larger than the 65,000 IP's it contains. Getting the job done would probably require blocking 86.128.0.0/12 and that is absolutely not an option- we're not blocking a million folks for one vandal, period.

I understand about the IP blocking, and appreciate any effort you can give; I suspect their ISP uses rotating IP's. At this point it looks like semi is the only option until whoever it is gets tired of the sophomoric pranks. Thank you so much for your help, and thank's Arctic for catching that. Morris Kessler

I hope you don't mind, but I've restored this article (can I dispute a PROD a little late? :P). The reason for this is because I think the PROD rationale was very broad and an unsupported claim, given that there were some sources in the article already. About the notability of Gary Barnacle, the "deletion decision" seems to me very-very/ultra questionable, and as far as I can read, the fact that he is not "listed" is totally false. I have an original copy of the triple and also the re-mastered version on 2-CD, and in both cases Gary Barnacle is listed among the guest musicians together with his brother. A simple "gigolo" search produces about 48,000 results, there is a page dedicated to him at Discogs, and about 190 articles on the English Wikipedia link to that page, ...and that is what I found in about 30 seconds (the time to read the album cover and run the gigolo search tool.) Also.... Do you think that Victuallers notified authors and projects about the deletion process??? I don't think so!!! I will not watchlist this page (my watchlist id too big) so, please, place a {{talkback}} on my talk page if you want/need to say something about this, but it would be really great of you if you can speedily undelete the page. Read WP:PROD to understand how this deletion process works. Deletions would show up in my admin logs, but never in my edits. I'll be happy to restore this as a contested PROD once you provide me one reliable source discussing this person, as I will in no circumstances restore an unsourced BLP without clear promise of imminent sourcing. RE: Orphaned non-free image File:Cover of 'Never Mind the Balkans, Here's Romania'.jp

Hi Courcelles, I uploaded this image in advance as User:Mike Ormsby is currently drafting the article about the book to which this cover image belongs. It could be that the image is deleted (February 10) before the article is sufficiently developed to go online. What is the best course of action? If it gets deleted, it can always be restored by a request at WP:REFUND. I don't know of any way to keep it from getting tagged as orphaned- if a human doesn't do it, a bot eventually will (at least in theory, the bot has been hit and miss lately.) Courcelles 00:45, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

OK, so I didn't wait for you to respond on January 27th. Today is February 4th -- over a week later. Is it possible for you to give a prediction as to how long it will take you to provide a helpful response?

If you are finding it difficult to explain your closure decision perhaps you could start by responding to my suggestion that when an administrator deletes material (1) they might think the material was irredeemably out of scope; (2) or they might think the material could be restored to article space with more work -- like more references. Perhaps you could start your explanation by going on record as to whether you thought the articles on the topics of the articles you deleted could be restored to article space with more work? Let's go through these- sorry for the delay. Mohammed Nasim (Guantanamo captive 849); fails BIO, non-notable, likely should never have an article unless things change radically. Nasrullah (Guantanamo detainee 886), fails BIO, again no significant coverage, heavier use of primary sources here, unlikely to ever merit an article. Mohammed Hashim seems to have one full source written about him, the problem is that it is a blog; which doesn't cut it for a BLP. Possible, if the sourcing got a complete and total upgrade, but I don't know if that is realistic to hope for. Rahmatullah Sangaryar is hopeless, the coverage is either boilerplate or USGOV sources, nothing in-depth about him. Very, very little chance. Abdul Razzak Hekmati, as a non-BLP has a chance. Needs several more sources like [1] and would still be susceptible to a BIO1E challenge- is he notable only for dying? Abdul Ghani (Guantanamo detainee 934) entirely primary sources; even the NYT source is really just a reprint of USGOV documents hosted there. Fails BIO completely. Abdul Bagi (detainee) is so close to the last one that repeating myself would be all I can do. Bismullah (Guantanamo detainee 968) is at least possible, if the sourcing was totally overhauled. Norullah Noori has a shot at passing POLITICIAN, if the claim of being governor of Balkh Province could be substantiated, but the sourcing is among the worst of the lot. This is the only one I could see a clear roadmap to getting back into articlespace, and even it is by no means guaranteed. Courcelles 17:07, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

WRT the one exception, Hekmati, can I ask how closely you looked at the NYTimes article? It is over 2300 words. Its long. It is detailed. I am very surprised to read that you think an article about him would be vulnerable to a meaningful "1 event" challenge. Would it be possible for you to take a second look at the NYTimes article, with an eye to counting how many of the events it describes you recognize as events that would be recognized as events that would be considered events during a wikipedia one event challenge? Try REFUND, you're likely to find an admin who doesn't have the same opposition to userified BLP's that I do, though I know I'm not the only one that operates that way.
