Recent changes edit

Hello, Commvolunteer. You recently made two changes to the White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia page. The first change (to add wikilinks to the word "sulphur" in the name of the town, and to wikilink "United States") was unnecessary. The United States was already wikilinked in the article, and since nothing in the article relates the name of the town to any actual sulphur nearby, there is no need for that wikilink. The second change you made was to add the article to the category Libraries in the United States. Since this article is not about a library, that is an inappropriate category for the article. Categories edit

Your recent addition to Category:Libraries in West Virginia was improper and has been reverted. Category pages in Wikipedia are not built by adding text directly to the page, but rather by adding the tag [[Category:Libraries in West Virginia]] to the article to be included in the category. Proposed deletion of Virginia Canals and Navigations Society edit

The article Virginia Canals and Navigations Society has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Good-faith media search (news, web, books, scholar) indicates that this organization is non-notable.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Bongomatic 10:12, 7 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of Virginia Canals and Navigation Society is not inevitable edit

Commvolunteer - I know proposed deletion is stressful for new editors. The deletion of this article is not inevitable and as an established society (1977) there must be sufficient 3rd party sourcing to verify notability. If you are serious about improving this article then there are some things I suggest you do.

  • 1st, find a number of 3rd party sources that discuss the society and its roles and contributions. The date of these sources is not important, nor do they have to come from the internet. Add the relevant information from the sources to the article and use in-line citations WP:Verify.
    • In the 33 years of its existence the society has surely recieved positive coverage in Virginia newspapers. If fact the Tiller edition I looked at has image credits from a Virginia newspaper that was obviously covering some event.
    • Other Canal, Navigation and Virginia Historic societies have probably covered or mentioned the society in their Journals and Proceedings.
    • The Virginia Chamber of Commerce and local chambers have at some time given the society positive coverage.
  • If you are close to the society or know members, ask them about positive 3rd party coverage in the last 33 years. There may be 3rd party sources in the society archives that will work fine.
  • You are free to remove the PROD notice from the article if you believe it is truly notable and can be supported with sources.

I am going to assist you with another avenue as well, and that is the solicitation of help from two WikiProjects--Wikipedia:WikiProject Virginia and Wikipedia:WikiProject Transport. You'll note I added the project templates to the article's talk page. WikiProjects are an excellent methodology to get editors interested in common topics together. I would encourage your participation in them.

Good Luck and I trust you will improve the article to meet WP guidelines and poilcies.--Mike Cline (talk) 21:28, 8 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think that Mike Cline's points are very helpful, especially asking other members to help look for sources. It is often helpful to look at the guidelines. I would also, if this article gets deleted, create the red link in the article that you created, The American Canal Society. You can put a section on how it has state-level counterparts. Finally, appearances, though they are not supposed to be important, always make editors more likely to keep an article, so consider tiding up and using the show preview button. Good Luck. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 02:55, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have been ill and out of touch for a long time. I did not know this page would be deleted and I would give anything to restore this page. It is a notable organization that has done a great deal of good. If there is some way I could fix this, I would be grateful.````

If you demonstrate that there are Reliable, 3rd party sources then you can re-create the page. (It would be a good idea to put those sources here, and I can look at them and see if they might stand up to AFD.) --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 16:13, 22 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Online sources edit

Commvolunteer, many libraries have access to NewsBank. My Virginia county library has access to the archives of a number of state newspapers. A quick search turned up over 150 news articles. The Virginia Canals and Navigations Society has done some good preservation work. Good luck.--Chuck369 (talk) 01:04, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
