Bot ideas for 3RR data

Hello Cobi. See Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive264#3RR Subset of this board, where I mentioned that you had the idea of a bot generating the data for 3RR reports. Feedback query

I submitted a report on a false positive [1], which was then archived. I then added a query asking about feedback from the false postive report [2] which was again archived. Can I have a reply? While it is true that it isn't exactly an obscenity, "lol" is generally something that should be inserted into an article with just a couple of other words. Because of this, that is on the obscenity list, and the bot will revert because of that. -- Cobi^(t|c|b) 22:30, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

One thing

First of all, starting out with "you seem to think" makes you sound highly arrogant, which I hope you're not. My figure of 6+ million Wikipedia users was actually someone else's figure (indeed, I said that in my comment as well, unless someone's edited it out). I do understand that there would be some sort of application process followed by some sort of filtering and vetting, as well as an assessment, of applicants, probably by several admins. Nonetheless, my point is clear. Despite everything admins might do to make sure a particular applicant for this ability is in the clear, there is nothing they can do to prevent a first-time vandal. Every vandal, as you might imagine, always had a first time. Some might have been more damaging than others, but the damage would have been done. This system is simply too dependent on the admins' judgment, when the implications for abuse are much more wide-reaching than any single admin's decision.

You still fail to address my point, that even if a first-time vandal were caught, the potential for abuse is still too great. If, for whatever reason, someone else had gotten access to someone else's login information and then went on a vandalism spree (which is not totally unimaginable), do I need to say any more? There is nothing any admin anywhere can do short of reading minds to prevent this tool from being abused for the first time. For the most part, the tools to which Wikipedia users have access are limited in that in such cases, the damage is recoverable. This newest idea has the potential (and it's not highly improbable either) to be unimaginably damaging, and that is why it ought not to be continued past the drawing board.

Banning words from articles?

Hi Cobi,

Another editor and I have, for the past few months, been battling a rather persistent vandal at The Streets who insists on inserting the word 'tender' into the phrase, ...at the (tender) age of five.... This user has used numerous IPs, been blocked on several occasions, but shows no signs of stopping, and has in fact become more active over the past few days. The other editor who I've mainly been working with told me that admins can request to have a word banned from an article using Cluebot. Obviously, this would be great for the situation at that article. I had never heard of this and didn't know the proper way to request it, which is what brings me here. Well, MercuryBot is a (beta) clone of MiszaBot. MiszaBot works based on the signatures, so it breaks if they aren't signed/dated. MiszaBot can do incremental archives automatically (Archive 1, Archive 2, etc). ClueBot III uses dated archives automatically, but can be set to do static archive names. ClueBot III can't automatically increment the archive after a certain amount of bytes. ClueBot III uses the history instead of the datestamps to determine whether or not it is time to archive. Inquiry from the press

A blogger has asked me these questions. We are discussing ways to prevent blight in online communities.

We are interested in statistics that show the number of vandalism attempts

on Wikipedia each month. I know these can be hard to broadly categorize, but we want to at least be able to say that these rollback edits are "maintenance" to undo edits that intentionally or unintentionally devalue the content.

1. How many rollbacks are performed each week?

2. What triggers a rollback?

3. What percentage of overall rollbacks are human initiated (versus machine, e.g. Cluebot).

4. What other statistics are available that can help capture the idea of fighting blight in the index?

1. To the right you will see a table with the number of rollbacks per week along with detected vandalism and averages.
2. There are several heuristics which trigger a revert, as you can see in the tables above.
   • An edit with a page blanking AES.
   • An edit with a page replacing AES (page blanking, then adding other stuff).
   • Removing a lot of good^* content (currently the threshold is <= -7,500 characters).
   • Adding a lot of bad^* content (currently the threshold is >= +7,500 characters).
   • Insertion of obscenities^* with a small change (currently the threshold is between -200 characters and +200 characters).
   • Insertion of exclamation points (three or more) with a small change (currently the threshold is between -200 characters and +200 characters).
   • ^* denotes that it scores the edit against its bad words list to determine this.
3. I don't have information about humans and their reverting, as there are so many tools that all use different edit summaries when reverting vandalism.
4. I can generate just about any statistics about ClueBot that can be done using the log data from each reversion.

open proxies

I'm confused by your bots on WP:OP - why is ClueBot finding proxies that ClueBot IV doesn't? —Random832 19:05, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

A couple of reasons, actually. One is timing: ClueBot IV checks several minutes later, possibly after they have gone offline. Second is firewalls: Several firewalls will block the IP address after a scan. So, after ClueBot checks, my IP is blocked and ClueBot IV finds nothing. Also, if ClueBot's scan didn't trigger the firewall, ClueBot IV's scan sometimes does. ClueBot IV scans all ports (all 65k of them), then does a version check on the ones it finds open, then finally checks the ones it found open for open proxies. So by time it checks for open proxies, the firewall might have already blocked ClueBot IV. -- Cobi^(t|c|b) 19:50, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi, any chance you can make ClueBot link to the contributions and/or talk page of the user it's reverting, rather than the user page, like rollback does? Vandals very rarely have user pages, so the link is almost always a red one; clicking it invites you to create a vandal's userpage for them, which is not much use, and even if it is blue it's unlikely one would be interested in looking there.
