UFC 83 AfD edit

Greetings, and welcome to Wikipedia!

It's nothing personal, but the entire page actually is speculative at this point. It's great that you cited a source for the page; most newer users don't go that far. Sherdog itself (and Serra, as welterweight champion) are also both reliable sources. Unfortunately, the article doesn't actually confirm anything about UFC 83. It says there's a tentative date, but it's not certain. It says they want it in Canada, but they don't have a venue locked down yet. It doesn't even mention that the event they're referring to is even UFC 83; just that Serra's agreed to fight St. Pierre at some point (hopefully April 19). For all we know, that could even be UFC 84, and I've heard speculation about that particular even actually being 84 because they might want to sneak in another PPV before then.

Unfortunately, at this point, it's probably going to be deleted (see the AfD page for the histories of other events that have been deleted). Once we get closer to the date and the UFC is able to confirm some hard dates and locations, the page can come back up.

Also, please sign your comments on talk pages with ~~~~ so we can see who the post came from. It helps with readability on discussions. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help. Gromlakh (talk) 01:58, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I understand your point about it being possible to update it later. The problem with the policy is that no information is available now, today. That's what makes it not an article worthy of being in an encyclopedia. The standard for inclusion is verifiability, and as of right now, nothing about UFC 83 can be verified.
The second source has another problem: it's not reliable. It's a random blog from...somebody, I'm not even sure who. It's taking the quote that Serra gave to NBC Sports confirming that he will fight St. Pierre and extrapolating something from it that he didn't say: that the fight will be at UFC 83. Again, nobody has confirmed this fight will be taking place at UFC 83. It could be at 84, depending on how many events take place between now and April. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gromlakh (talkcontribs) 02:17, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Blogs are not reliable sources. Please see numerous discussions on WT:MMA on the very few blogs that are accepted as reliable sources. The issue with the UFC 83 page is not the number of sources; it's the information itself. All these blogs are just restating the information that is known and was given out by Serra yesterday: that he's fighting Georges St. Pierre, they expect it to be in Montreal, it's probably UFC 83. Aside from the fact of the fight, nothing else with respect to UFC 83 is actually confirmed or official. If/when the UFC is able to book the Bell Centre (which they've tried and failed to do repeatedly because of conflicts with the hockey schedule) and officially announces the event, then the page could be created and kept. Your recent edits edit

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. New problems edit

Now you're off into a radically new territory of problems. First, as I believe User:TJ Spyke already pointed out, the source you cited said nothing about the Bisping/McCarthy fight on March 8 being UFC 83. There's an event at that time, but we don't know what it is. Maybe it's 83, maybe it's a fight night. We can't speculate on that, because doing so would be original research. We must let the sources speak for themselves, and there's absolutely nothing out there that has confirmed UFC 83, UFC 84, or anything else. The safe bet is to add the fight to GSP's page and to Serra's page, because the fight itself can be confirmed. The events cannot and their pages are likely to be deleted. Gromlakh (talk) 03:41, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey, it's not a problem. You're trying to contribute, and you're not trying to hurt or vandalize anything. You're just new, and from what I see, you're doing quite well for a new user. You're citing sources and trying to work on things. The UFC 83 page probably won't stay up this time, but it'll be there eventually.
In the mean time, consider joining Wikiproject: Mixed Martial Arts. If you're a UFC fan, you might find several articles there that you may be interested in editing. If there's anything else that I can do to help, just drop me a line. Gromlakh (talk) 03:50, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

UFC event images edit

Please check over the image policies before you start adding images to the UFC events pages. We're not allowed to link to other websites to use their images, and even if you do, it doesn't show up properly on the page if you do it like that. You have to go through the process of uploading the image to Wikipedia itself, and you have to make sure that the licensing of the image is such that it can be freely used on Wikipedia. Thanks! Speedy deletion of UFC 84 edit

A tag has been placed on UFC 84 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. UFC 84 edit

A discussion is happening right now on the fate of UFC 84. Response edit

At the outset, I highly suggest you review WP:CIVIL and WP:NPA. If you continue to be uncivil in your dealings with other editors and attack them by calling them "a douche", you can end up getting blocked.

As to the substance of your comment, at the time you posted UFC 83 there was no confirmed information about it. The page was purely speculative, and it was deleted pursuant to Wikipedia policy. I was not the person who deleted it; I was simply the person who brought the page to the community's attention. The community, not me, decided to delete the page, and that decision was correct.

Furthermore, for quite some time it appeared that UFC 83 would not be in Montreal. For weeks (if not months), the plan was to have it in the UK sometime in March. Only recently did plans change and the UK event get scrapped. Rumors sometimes turn out to be true, and sometimes plans change. In this instance, plans changed and UFC 83 got moved to Montreal. That doesn't mean the page shouldn't have been deleted at the time you created it. If no reliable sources can verify the claims you're making on the page and all you can point to are rumors, the page will be deleted. If you don't like that, head over to village pump and make your case for Wikipedia to make a fundamental change in content policies. Gromlakh (talk) 21:54, 2 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
