PFL formating edit

Hey Hey, I am just messaging regarding how to format the events for the fighter records, at this point we are doing PFL 1, 2, 3, 4, for every year. However it just blends together. I think it should be PFL 1 (2021), PFL 2 (2021), etc. Just to differentiate the events on the fighter records. Likewise, with the merger of Bellator and PFL, should we merge the "List of current X fighter" pages or keep the pages seperate? HeinzMaster (talk) 03:08, 24 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I say keep the 'current fighter' pages separate, especially as they've announced they're going to run the promotions separately. Nswix (talk) 03:12, 24 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
As stated by Nswix, the current fighter pages should remain separate since the promotions are not merging, rather operating simultaneously. In regards to the titling of events, I don't really have an opinion over removing "season" from the year dates. ♡RAFAEL♡(talk) 03:57, 24 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Since the still work separate, the "currant fighters lists" should keep at they are until such a day when the all the fighters are under one umbrella. As of event name proposal, I support. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 05:57, 24 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I agree with all of the above. Keep the fighters lists separate until the promotions actually merge and modify the event names. GameRCrom (talk) 19:49, 24 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I agree with everyone above. Keep them separate as they're indeed different promotions under a same management. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 15:23, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I've also just noticed the way some articles were updated... I do believe simply having the year alongise the event works easily. There are events titled as "PFL 10: 2023 Season PFL Championships" for example and I believe that's too long. Not everyone is fighting for a championship or a playoff, those situations will definitely be mentioned on the notes section. I suggest just keeping "PFL 10 (2023) or (2023 season) for example". That's cleaner and easier to read. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 15:27, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Is this fighter notable now? edit

Maiju Suotama has officially now fought once in Strikeforce and twice in Invicta. Is Maiju Suotama now a good candidate to have a wikipedia article created? Dwanyewest (talk) 11:33, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Fighting in top tier promotions isn’t apart of the criteria anymore. ♡RAFAEL♡(talk) 21:28, 28 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

K-1 Hero’s Top Tier - Defunct edit

Hero’s had many Fight Matrix top 10 ranked fighters competing exclusively for the promotion. These fighters include Gesias Cavalcante, BJ Penn, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Norifumi Yamamoto, Vitor Ribeiro and Rani Yahya. K-1 Hero’s should be listed in WP:MMATIER as a Tier 1 - Defunct organization. Jyglesias3 (talk) 22:19, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Promotional tiers don't really matter anymore regarding notability, ever since the Great Sports Notability purge. HeinzMaster (talk) 22:48, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Talk:Jason Knight (wrestler) § Birth date, birth name edit

Input from experienced project members would be welcome in the discussion at Talk:Jason Knight (wrestler) § Birth date, birth name. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 18:54, 14 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@ToBeFree Category talk:WikiProject Professional wrestling would be better probably Nswix (talk) 19:08, 14 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've already posted notice there, as subject has nothing to do with MMA. Chris Troutman (talk) 19:12, 14 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
ToBeFree Subject is not a mixed martial fighter and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Professional wrestling is the right venue instead. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 01:09, 16 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Nickname translations edit

@Articlread @Sdpdude9@Cassiopeia@Damvj@AddedUpdatePoster@PowrotKrola@Marty2Hotty@KyleBYerrick@HeinzMaster@Ogorki the Picklehog@RafaelHP@Gsfelipe94 I wanted to start a formal discussion about nickname translations, like the ones that for years were uncontroversial on Alex Pereira, Jailton Almeida, and Deiveson Figueiredo, before Articlread decided they needed to go. As far as I was concerned translations don't need a source, are informative to anyone who doesn't know that 'Poatan' means 'Hands Of Stone' and aren't particularly controversial and I vote they can stay, but I'll heed if everyone else decides I'm in the wrong here. Nswix (talk) 20:36, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

In the nickname section or in the main article. I like the idea. Even Charles' "Do Bronx" has a meaning that can be explained in the main article with a source. Marty2Hotty (talk) 22:37, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
It originally was next to the nickname in the infobox ie Dues de Guerra (God of War). I'm all for a source if there is one, but in the case of someone like Thiago Santos where his nickname Marreta is easily translated as Sledgehammer, do we really need one? Nswix (talk) 00:59, 17 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Creatorial: looping in Creatorial here since they ask me the same question on my talk page. I have yet to come across a guidelines in translation of nickname (may be one but I have yet to know). However, as most of you know that I am always go by Wikipedia guidelines whenever it is possible since we are all Wikipedia's here and I am also a one of NPPS and CVUA trainers to do what I teach/as a mentor. English Wikipedia core policy is verifiability by independent, reliable source (sparingly primary sources can be used with strict guidelines for content)
(1) Nicknames in the infobox - Keep the name names as per Sherdog (it is also sourced at the bottom of the infobox). If a translation of the nickname can be sourced and have a meaning of why the nickname is given Pls see Jiří Procházka's nicknames (note he change his nick name "Denisa" to "BJP" (sourced, translations and meanings) then we can put the info on the "Personal life section"
(2) Fighters name of their own languages (pls note User:Creatorial) - (where they are born; not for those who born in US, UK or other courtiers whose heritage/parent are from somewhere else such as Belal Muhammad, Nasrat Haqparast and etc. where they were born in US and Germany respectively) should be sourced. Pls note there are many Wikipedia languages and each languages have their own guidelines and they work independently from each other and how they reinforce the guidelines. Since this is English Wikipedia, many of the readers/viewers do not know other languages and do not know if the translation or local names is as per stated (I would not know if Tatsuro Taira Japanese name is "平良達郎" for example, so if an independent, reliable source can support the claim then I think can be placed in the article. To say all that we are not going to translate other stuff in the article since this is ENGLISH Wikipedia. Last note, any languauges sources CAN be used in English Wikipedia provided they are independent and reliable. Thank you everyone for your time, efforts to improve Wikipedia especially in MMA related article and thank you for all your civility, politeness, and helping each other in this planform in the spirit of Wikipedia. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 02:17, 17 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I strongly agree with Cassiopeia. The nicknames in general are meant to be said the way they are per the sherdog page. Believe it or not any information put on any article in this site should be sourced and backed up with evidence, The translations had no sources of any kind. You can can add the translations in the body of the article with a source telling readers how the fighter got the nickname or why they got it but I don’t agree with having the translations in the infobox itself. Many thanks Nswix. Articlread (talk) 02:50, 17 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
