Mikaela Davis edit

Mikaela Davis is a Romanian American musician and harpist. Performing as a soloist and under the band name Southern Star, she grew up in Rochester, New York, expanding her musical reach by touring further out into the country from this area. Eventually, Mikaela would merge in a musical capacity with Robert Hall Weir Parber (Bob Weir); best known as a founding member of the Grateful Dead.

Founding Southern Star with high school friend, Alex Coté, initially on keyed instruments (bells and glockenspiel), she is noted as expressing a trustworthiness in sharing her otherwise closely kept songs with him in their formative years.  Eventually, a kick drum “aka” bass drum and snare drum were added to round out the sound.  Around 2013, studying at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, New York., under the Professorship Jessica R. Suchy-Pilalis, Mikaela would meet Cian McCarthy. They added his guitar and sitar playing to the group. Shortly thereafter, brother Shane McCarthy joined as a bassist.  This addition was partially because the band was beginning to play larger venues and evolving as a fully formed stage presence.

Opening for Brooklyn based Rubble Bucket at Waterstreet Music Hall, Mikaela convinced Shane to graduate high school early at age 14 in order to tour with Southern Star.  Rochester musician Kurt Johnson finally appeared with the band on Lap and Pedal Steel Guitar.  As of 2022, the band is inactive.

EARLY LIFE

Mikaela was formally introduced to the harp in her third grade year upon being presented numerous instrument choices by directors; ultimately being inspired by her instrument of choice. It was shown to her lastly in the consultation with mentors as a choice.  She began to write her own music at age 11, drawing inspiration from mysticism, dream interpretations, familial experiences and non-linear ideologies. She notes these relatives would eventually affect her role as a musician and transcend her approach as an improvisational musician.

Private lessons starting in the fourth grade with Grace Wong, former Principal harpist of the Rochester Philharmonic and lasting through high school advanced her knowledge of the instrument. The thought arrived to attend graduate school and potentially serve as an instructor in the traditional sense.  However, her path veered into the live music scene where an unorthodox, but not completely singular approach as a harpist grew on stage and through historically significant Internet broadcasts.

Influenced early in life by musicians Vanessa Carlson, Michael Jackson, Sufjan Stephens, Elliot Smith, Joanna Newsom and Alice Coltrane, Mikaela Davis would eventually anchor herself in the Hudson Valley, bein close to hogme and also within an easier reach to larger surrounding cities.
