Hi Cathal.

I have been looking at two article to which you contributed, Coláiste na hÉireann and Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge. I'd like to help you improve your contributions so that material you have added is not deleted.

It is essential when adding to an article that you provide citations supporting that information, and which show that it is reliable. I have flagged the two articles to show that citations are missing. Information that is unsupported by citations can be challenged and removed by any editor, according to the rules of Wikipedia.

One of your edits to Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge contained the edit summary "added a substantial amount of information about the subject, mostly from the official website." Thank you for including the edit summary; too many editors do not include one. However, secondary sources are always preferred because primary sources, such as the website of the subject being written about, are not independent and are usually self-promoting. An article which relies too much on information from the subject of the article is not as robust as it might be, and such primary sources are strongly discouraged.

It is essential to avoid language promoting or showing approval for the subject of the article. Wikipedia provides information, not promotion. In Coláiste na hÉireann, I removed a reference to "popular" textbooks and to the institution " trading on its good name in the industry." I removed the word "successfully" from the sentence, "The course was delivered successfully for several years."

In Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, I removed the unproven claim that it is "the foremost body of its kind." Such inclusions are inappropriate.

I also removed the sentence, "However it may yet prove to be a stepping stone to the kind of institution that Arthur Clery proposed so long ago." Firstly, I do not know what it refers to, and secondly, it is entirely speculative. Such a statement could be legitimate in a magazine article, but not in an encyclopaedia.

Finally, in writing about Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, you refer frequently in the article to "the Acadamh" instead of calling it "the academy." While the offical name is Acadamh, this is the English langauge Wikipedia, consulted by an international audience, so we use English. The term acadamh is appropriate in Vicipéid. I have substituted English for Irish in the article.

Hi O'Dea,

Thank you for your helpful message. I see that I was not careful enough in removing subjectivity from the sources I was referencing. I will try to avoid similar mistakes in future and to search out secondary sources for most of the information I add where possible.

The sentence about Arthur Clery was refering to the importance of higher education in groups' own languages. I was planning on fleshing it out more when I got the time and if I do I might include that line again without the speculative part. Perhaps it should be the subject of a separate page instead.

I will go back over those pages including appropriate citations. I assume that as I do it would be appropriate for me to remove the "Citation needed" warnings myself?

Moves

Hi, we try not to move articles by copying-and-pasting them, since we need to preserve history. You can either use the WP:MOVE functionality for completely uncontroversial moves, or in other cases you can start a requested moves discussion. It appears "Oilliphéist" is the preferred variant in English language sources, which we try to follow.
