2007 A&M vs. Tech

Sounds accurate and unbiased to me. The game should be an interesting one. The Red Raiders can't seem to stop the run and the Aggies can't seem to stop the pass. I agree that it might well come down to the final score. I'm hoping that both teams come in undefeated (though I'm worried about TTU @ OSU). That would really ramp up the importance of the game. →Wordbuilder 20:05, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing it. That'll teach me to write "accurate" when I'm not paying attention. →Wordbuilder 17:00, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Ouch! Sorry about your loss. I was hope both Tech and A&M would be undefeated going into their game in Lubbock. →Wordbuilder 14:13, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
I knew there had been some rumbling to replace Fran, making this his do-or-die season. It was before my time so I don't know all the ins and outs of it, but Moore's record at Tech isn't wonderful. At App State is a different matter, though. →Wordbuilder 19:04, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

2007 season articles

Hi BlueAg, I hope you are doing well. Thank you for your message and for your kind words on the 2007 UT football article. I think it is coming along fairly well, although I'm a little worried about the ultimate length given where it is for this point in the season. I would love to split out some individual games according to WP:Summary, though in the past I have had to fight to keep those from being deleted at AfD (for instance 2005 Texas vs. Texas A&M football game) so I'll have to see how it goes. The length question is exacerbated somewhat by the fact that this year there is a fair amount of off-field stuff, like stadium renovations, coaching changes and pay raises, etc. If our players would stop getting arrested, that would cut down some on the amount of stuff I have to include!

I have looked at more than half of the team articles for this year. I think the Big12 is very well represented on Wikipedia this season. The A&M, OU and UT articles are all very comprehensive. Nmajdan is doing good work as his team continues to roll. The CU and TT articles are pretty good too and If I know Mecu and Wordbuilder they will keep after it. Speaking of the A&M article, you are doing a fine job with it. I don't know if you noticed, but just before you started the article, I had been talking with Macae about creating it. You just beat us to it! So, I have made just a few edits, including that photo I found on Flickr.

I sort of think it might be fun to challenge my fellow college football editors to a friendly little wager about who can make the best article by the end of the season, but on the other hand I think it might be more fun to support each other through the process and a challenge like that could get in the way. Plus, you have so many good Aggie editors on Wikipedia right now that you would probably win hands down. Speaking of good Aggies, I did make a little bet with BQZip01 about the outcome of the UT/A&M game itself: Loser has to post a banner supporting the winning team. Should be good fun.

So far this years Longhorn team has me dreaming a bit of recent days gone by. Speaking of which, did you notice that article made FA? So, we do know it is possible to get one of these seasons all the way there if we keep after it. Nmajdan is hoping to get the 2006 OU article there as well.

I look forward to working with you on all these articles as the season goes on. Best, Johntex\talk 00:58, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

PS - about the tickets - thank you for reminding me because I forgot to let you know. I have decided to take a little vacation out-of-the-country over Thanksgiving. Therefore, I will not be looking for a ticket after all. This is very rare for me to agree to be away from my HDTV during football season. Hopefully my Tivo will not let me down. I'll be back to catch up on the game on Sunday. It should be interesting to see what everyone else has done with the articles while I'm away! Thanks very much for thinking of me though. Opponent rankings

I added rankings for future opponents on the 2007 Texas A&M Aggies football team schedule to give readers an idea of what the more difficult games are perceived to be. No ranking implies, for someone who doesn't follow football, that the teams are not ranked at all, nor will they likely be on game day. ESPN does it the same way, where future opponent rankings are up-to-date and change weekly.

And I don't really post on TexAgs, although I am a frequent visitor for the A&M and recruiting news. I've seen your posts a couple times drumming up support for wikipedia. I was hoping to get a clue of who the next A&M president will be on there, but no such luck. I'll probably be fine with the decision, just so long as it isn't him. :) -Texink[talk] 00:32, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Aggieland

Thanks for remembering about the picture! I mainly wanted to see the message -- I thought it would be a great initial picture for the Traditions of Texas A&M page. No hurry on it, though; I'm sure you're busy with classes now. Karanacs 13:28, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi BlueAg09, yes, I think that looks very good. I would only change one thing. In the first section, I would take out the sentence "Many Aggie fans have joined the movement to have Coach Fran fired." "Many" can be considered a "weasel word" since to some people it might mean 50 and to others it might mean 50,000. Also, the very next sentence contains more specifics, so I think that sentence can just come out completely. Best, Johntex\talk 23:20, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Message on my page

Hey BlueAg09, I see your point on the rankings on the schedules. I, also, noticed that ESPN does the rankings for the entire schedule and then updates them during game week. After I edited the Texas A&M page I noticed that other schedules had it the same way. Lets see what other people say about this on the wikiproject page. Dawg1279 18:04, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Vick 'em

I have to be honest, BlueAg, I might not be the best person to make the decision since I'm biased in that it portrays Tech in a negative light. I think a bit unfairly, too. Nearly all of the feedback I heard from Tech fans, alumni, and student condemned the shirts as tasteless, classless, and stupid. This is shown in the fact that the guy only sold about 300. But, since it did make the news, I'll leave the decision to you. Best of luck to you guys on Saturday. Here's to an injury-free game. →Wordbuilder 02:24, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

We should just use the "Fear the [crab]!!!" quote and leave it at that. {:o) →Wordbuilder 14:27, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Do you know of any news reports closer to the event that discussed the batteries being thrown? Up until now, it has pretty much been the stuff of Internet message board lore so I was surprised to see it included in that story. →Wordbuilder 02:10, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

I wish I was going to the game but I only catch one a year. This go around it was last week's beatdown of Iowa State. →Wordbuilder 20:36, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the congrats. The Aggies do have a tough road ahead but, these days, Tech isn't an easy win. So, I wouldn't count your guys out for the rest of the season just because of this loss. →Wordbuilder 02:13, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Table

Oooh, Shiny! Yes, I like that table very much. I think it would go well between Championships and the Individual awards. It could either be its own section "Rankings" or we could rename "Championships" to "Championships and rankings".

That actually gives me another idea also. It might be nice to have a table of bowl games and results. What do you think about that - have you seen any team page with such a table?

If we go for a bowl game table, we could possibly combine it with the rankings table since the ranked teams will tend to correlate (somewhat) with bowl visits. We could also make the table sortable like I did at College football's ten most victorious programs. Johntex\talk 20:29, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Yes, that table looks good. For unranked teams in bowl games, I think we could just put a "-" or "N/A" or "unranked", I think. Johntex\talk 21:16, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
HMmm... I would think that all ranked teams would normally be going to a bowl game. I can think of some possible exceptions:
  1. A team on no-bowl probation
  2. Possibly in the early days, when there were fewer bowls, it is possible that not all ranked teams were getting bids.
  3. Didn't Notre Dame have a policy for a while that they would not attend bowls? It seems like I have read that but I don't remember what time period that was. I don't know if any other teams ever took that stance. I know one year (42?) Texas turned down a Rose Bowl invite because of some politics. There may be other cases like that sprinkled through history.
Do you think it would mess up the table too much to use "N/A" or similar for these occasions? Johntex\talk 22:31, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
When you say "Template", do you mean in Template-space? I'm not sure I see the advantage to doing that vs just making a table. Johntex\talk 00:54, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm... Yes, if we make it a template other articles can certainly use it, but even if we don't make it a template, people can just copy and paste the format. Maybe making it a template increases the likelihood of people sticking to the format? I think the main reason the schedule is templatized is to embed logic about color coding the rows. Let's run it past Nmajdan. He is the Template King. I will leave him a message. Johntex\talk 16:21, 18 October 2007 (UTC) message left for NMajdan

Re: Reggie McNeal

I have added a citation from the transaction page of the CFL website with the latest transaction I could find with McNeal's name, showing him released from the Argos' practice roster. I'll also cite the latest depth chart released by the Argos that neglects to show McNeal's name on the practice roster: http://www.argonauts.ca/Argos/Images/Uploads/2007/Gamenotes/Regseason17vsWpgOct27DC.pdf

Thanks for bringing this to my attn! Amchow78 03:30, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

From what I have observed, the folks responsible for updating the ARGOS' transaction page are very lax with the updating! Some of the team's transactions go unmentioned! Conversely, the transaction page on the CFL's website is way more up to date and concise in comparison to the Argos! That said, the league's site is way more reliable than the ARGOS' site! Mack Brown

Thanks for the note, I had not noticed them but I just checked them. They look very nice, thank you. That one championship sure does look lonely though, sigh. Maybe next year. <grin> Johntex\talk 03:55, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Interesting article. I think there could be a "relationship with the media" section added to that article. The media usually seems to love Brown, so I think we will want to find a few different sources to make sure the section is balanced. I've fallen a bit behind in keeping up 2007 Texas Longhorn football team, but once I get caught up a bit, I can try to improve the Mack Brown article. Johntex\talk 15:46, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. I didn't invent it - I saw it somewhere else, though I don't remember where I first saw it. I think it is useful for these well-referenced articles. I also came across this discussion - you may want to chime in there. Johntex\talk 23:28, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
2007 Longhorns vs Aggies - good idea. I copied a few sentences over. Please let me know what you think, or feel free to edit and improve. I'm heading to bed now so I will wish you good night. Johntex\talk 09:18, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
Regarding Brown: Another thing that came up regarding the OK-State game is that he actually got mad and yelled at the players. Very unusual for Brown. And afterwards, he stated that the officials are not doing a good enough job at protecting players from the fans - apparently Texas was getting pelted. I'll plan to work all that in also. Johntex\talk 09:23, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
Bonus: Did you see any of Mike Leach's commentary about the officials today? Not as amusing and Gundy but still pretty good. I think the Big12 is winning the award for most soap-opera coaching. Johntex\talk 09:23, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Fran

The news reports I saw in the 24 hours after the game were that Mike Leach should expect to be fined and possibly suspended. I did not see an update yesterday to see if the conference took action.

I feel for you in your coaching situation. I love that the article about A&M mentions John Mackovic. I lived through those years, and they weren't pleasant. I do find it amusing that they mention that Mackovic did actually win the Big 12. He was truly enigmatic in that he coached the team to pull off some spectacular upsets and yet he let UT get torched by UCLA in Austin to the tune of 66 points. Unbelievable. David McWilliams didn't quite work out for us either, but at least he spoke with a twang and wore cowboy boats, not the wingtips favored by Machovic. McWilliams embraced Darrell K Royal instead of feeling threatened by him. He was a good fit for the culture of the UT program. I think he might have even been able to be successful but he was probably a little too green. Had he grabbed the UT job 3 or 4 years later, things might have been very different.

I have no clue who A&M will pick. It is obvious Fran is history. That's a good thing as far as I'm concerned. From Day One he seemed like poor fit, culturally, for A&M. I just hope you don't get somebody who is a real jerk. Out of the list you mentioned, I have watched Tommy Tuberville and Steve Spurrier the most. Both of them seem like good men as well as good catches. I hope you get a man like that, someone the program can feel good about. I find it hard to believe Tuberville would want to leave Auburn. What would be the attraction? I would think Auburn gives him about as good a chance to play-for/win a national championship as just about anywhere. On the other hand, I don't know if Spurrier can do it where he is at. He might be enticed; I don't know. The rest of the list I am not really familiar with.

I would like to see a stronger A&M for the sake of Texas and for the rivalry. I'm more than a bit apprehensive about a strong A&M while OU is still doing so well, not to mention the resurgent north. I'm not sure how long the north will be able to play at this level. I think this year's Kansas team is for real but I don't know if they can sustain it. It could be a truly murderous conference!

I am very certain that last year's 12-7 A&M win was fairly fluky. Colt McCoy was definitely not in condition to play. The upcoming defection of Gene Chizik was probably already being felt on defense also. Having said that, I would not be too certain of your demise this year. Jamaal Charles can rip off an 80 yard touchdown but he can also fumble at the opponents goal line. We have more injuries stacked up than the emergency room at Ben Taub. Plus we will be at Kyle Field and that always seems to be worth a touchdown. My guess would be a Texas win in a pretty close game. Let's call it 28-21, with 7 of your points coming directly off an interception or kick return. That is my guess.

I'll actually be out-of-country and off-wiki next week. I will Tivo the game and watch when I return. Best, Johntex\talk 16:01, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

  • The Austin American-Statesman reported that the Big12 did not comment yet on Leach. The story also mentions Colorado being denied 2 last-second field goals. Johntex\talk 16:51, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

re: vince young

where is this 'talk page'? i would like to edit/contribute in an acceptible manner in the future. regarding any sort of negative feedback to my submittals, i would liek to point out that i was also correcting some blatant cheerleading in support of the player that was in no way an honest portrayal. for example, young's QB rating was listed by someone with no reference. i updated this by showing the exact weight of the figure in terms on the NFL as a whole. this rating was 30th of 31. that is a verifiable FACT. then why would someone go in and tamper with this legitimate clarification? there is only one answer: 'pro' young bias. i will not stand for it, nor should anyone.

this should be an accurate statement on this player, period. i would like to see an unbiased view of young. let the chips fall where they may. and where they are falling is:

2006: 30th of 31 in QB rating 2007: 30th of 31 in QB rating

this is extremely bad. we need not shy away from this fact. to ignore it or minimalize it is to bury one's head in the sand, and since this is wikipedia - to bury the world's head in the sand.

as i have hopefully shown, i am more than willing to 'play within the rules' here. i am new to this arena, so am ignorant of the methodology. but i will fight against misinformation in support of young, tooth and nail. misinformation through lack of qualification is not acceptible. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.183.61.196 (talk) 01:39, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Vince "Mr. Overated" Young

You recently removed an addition made to the Vince Young page. The comment was coined by a popular football analyst and several colleagues shared the same view. It was not a nonconstructive addition as it was from a professional. So stop checking around on this site to see if someone displays your favorite Texan as a clown or something.

RE: A. D. Bruce

Hello, RJN. I noticed you removed the "first chancellor" part from A.D. Bruce's description on the List of Texas A&M University people article. Wasn't he the first chancellor? This source says so. BlueAg09 (Talk) 01:33, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

That source contains an error. Please see this source: http://www.uh.edu/admin/president/rudley/pages/chancpres.html The first Chancellor of the University of Houston System was Philip G. Hoffman in 1977—the year that the university system was established. —RJN (talk) 01:36, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

re: vince young and passer rating

here arer a couple of sources. after his latest dismal performance, he is actually now the 31st of 31 QB's. dead last.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/stats/bycategory?cat=Passing&sort=49

ESPN uses a lower pass total for their leaderboard, but young is still listed at #31 by them:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/statistics?stat=pass&sort=rat&league=nfl&season=2&year=2007

as for last season, my claim of him being 30th of 31 is verified here:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/stats/bycategory?cat=Passing&conference=NFL&year=season_2006&timeframe=All&qualified=1&sort=49&old_category=Passing

so, to verifiy: in his first season, he finished 30th in QB passer rating with a 66.7 rating

in 2007, his second season, he is now 31st in QB rating with a 65.3 after 11 games

he is currently T-4th in throwing interceptions. in his last seven games, he has thrown a total of two touchdowns (two more than my dog's ass), and 11 interceptions. he has as many INT's as he did last year in 15 games, but has thrown seven fewer TD's and 500 fewer yards.

in that same span, he has also rushed for 201 yards on 57 carries (3.5 per carry).

clearly, a QB who has consistently been one of the worst two QBs in the NFL (QB passer rating) for two years running, and is indeed the worst when looked at over the two-year period, has got to be viewed as a massive failure when considering his pedigree.

also, as far as the Wonderlic test results go, he indeed made a six in the first go of it. the test results are not supposed to be reported, but they were. he was allowed to retake the test and received a 16.

here is a usatoday article verifying this:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/draft/2006-03-01-young-wonderlic_x.htm

it is true that the average Wonderlic test score is 21. the six was the worst ever by an NFL player. the 16 is still extremely poor.

here is a site showing NFL QB scores:

http://www.macmirabile.com/Wonderlic/Wonderlic.htm

i have only recently seen anybody begin to start questioning young's abilities in the mainstream press. i just looked around, but could not find it. i think it was on thesportingnews.com. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.183.61.196 (talk) 01:33, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Ugh

To BlueAg, BQ, and Aggies everywhere:

What a rough day I've had. 24 hours traveling home and then that debacle waiting for me on my Tivo.

Unlike some "experts", I suspected that A&M stood a good chance of winning that game, but that doesn't make the defeat go down any easier. How bad is it to be out-coached by a guy who is being chased out of town? Pretty sad.

I'd like to think it bodes well for the UT/A&M rivalry, but it would really be better if A&M was at least ranked if they are going to beat us like that.

Oh well, I suppose I will recover eventually. As previously agreed with BQ, I'll be ready to deface my user and talk pages over the bowl season as a result of loosing the bet. Enjoy your victory and good luck with your new coach. Johntex\talk 16:44, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

FYI, with my experience with the main page thing, you can expect an enormous influx of vandalism/unhelpful edits/etc (realize that this is the 8th most-visited site on the web and about 40% of visitors read the FA of the Day first). I'll check it as much as I can that day, but I will be traveling and at a wedding, so my help will be limited (I actually took the day off when the Aggie Band article was on the main page...it still wasn't enough...). Be wary of the three revert rule WP:3RR. Make sure you warn them before reporting. If you decide to report it, someone will usually block that user in a matter of 3-5 minutes, even at 3 A.M. Once you report it, don't do anything for about 10 minutes with that person. They will get blocked and you can just revert once saving yoruself a major headache. — BQZip01 — talk 18:18, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Ah, sweet! thanks for putting up the cropped image. Personally, I'd prefer to use the one at the top of the page, but can't seem to do that without violating fair use laws. Do you have time to call the Texas A&M PR department? They might be willing to release it? I can't while I'm at work and they will likely be closed by the time I get a chance. Can you try that? Someone in this guy's office should be able to help.

BTW, I already replaced the old image with the cropped one - you probably have to refresh the page to see the difference. I am going to call them and find out what can be done. BlueAg09 (Talk) 18:27, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
I got a response. They said Bonfire is a trademark of the university and thus the picture cannot carry a free license, since it's a derivative work of the trademark. BlueAg09 (Talk) 18:38, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Sounds like a bad PR move on their part, but I guess they have to protect their trademark. Oh well. Have you uploaded those other pictures? — BQZip01 — talk 20:46, 18 December 2007 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.44.121.252 (talk)
Excellent lead on the pictures. I'll have to go through them to find what I need, but they should do the trick with the post-collapse pictures. I'd really like to get pictures pre-1999. Hopefully I'll have more time to devote to this tomorrow night. — BQZip01 — talk 03:09, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Can you upload this picture (note the Aggie Band in the Background...gotta plug that) and this picture (make sure to note the guy in the photo is "Will D. Wilkinson"...might as well say who he is) using OTRS? I read through that page and I am a bit confused as to what I should do. Additionally, I am busy this weekend and won't be able to help much. Anything you can do to help would be useful. — BQZip01 — talk 00:58, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

You're fast!

Man, you're fast at reverting all those vandals. I just noticed that we'd been profiled now (I was expecting later tonight), and every time I've been about to revert someone I find out you snuck in ahead of me. Thanks!!! Karanacs (talk) 02:28, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for all your help! I'm going to have to think about switchng to Firefox so I can use Twinkle. Merry Christmas! Karanacs (talk) 03:07, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for everything and Merry Christmas to you too! Couldn't agree more. This went a lot better than the FTAB article. — BQZip01 — talk 04:02, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
