The word "impossible" is too strong. It implies there is a theoretical principal being violated in doing spell checking locally on a dumb terminal. I think the IBM Selectric already had spell checkers by the date of the introduction of Xedit. There was no great technical barrier to putting a spell checker into a typing device. It would have been impractical, and probably not cost effective, but, it would have been possible.
