Use British English tag edit

Hello, I have noticed [edit] in which you added the Use British English tag to an article about a university in Vietnam that was already using American English (organization, center, program). Per MOS:RETAIN "When an English variety's consistent usage has been established in an article, maintain it in the absence of consensus to the contrary. With few exceptions (e.g., when a topic has strong national ties or the change reduces ambiguity), there is no valid reason for changing from one acceptable option to another." Can I ask why you added this tag? AusLondonder (talk) 16:28, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Fixed. Thank you. Betterkeks (talk) 16:43, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Editing in FEB24review edit

Thank you for contributing to the backlog drive by reviewing edits, but there were some problems with your edit to Penrith Rural District. Going through the 4 changes you made:

  1. You added the SD: fine, thanks, I must have forgotten to do so.
  2. You rearranged the order of the leading templates: please see WP:ORDER, where maintenance templates such as {{unreferenced}} are placed before date and language variant templates such as {{Use dmy dates}}. It makes sense: templates showing problems, which ought to be removed eventually, come before those which are a permanent part of the article. If you are using software which is putting these templates into the wrong place, please note that your edits are your responsibility and you should make sure that the final result is correct. I've rearranged them back into the correct order.
  3. You reformatted the reference. The title which is displayed on screen is "Penrith RD", and I have always believed that we show the reader the title as displayed. Yes, in case like this, and in some newspaper articles, a different title is displayed in the header bar on screen, but to avoid confusing the reader ("Hey, this isn't the article I was looking for, it's got a different title"), we should stick to what is shown to the reader. I've found, or remembered, that we have a template for Vision of Britain, {{Cite vob}}, so have now used that.
  4. You changed the format of the "Access-date" from my preferred "16 February 2024" to the all-numeric "2024-16-02". Either form is allowed in access-dates, but you should not change the format of dates chosen by a previous editor unless there is a good reason to do so. Again, this may be a fault of whatever software you are using, but it is your responsibility to do things right.

Thanks, PamD 08:34, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

OK.
1. I understand this isn’t a goal of this drive.
2. Thanks for pointing this out, and thanks for putting them into order as per WP:ORDER.
3. The cited page has “How to reference this page” instructions, so I followed ‘em. I’ll leave it up to you PamD.
4. OK. Note however that the {{Use dmy dates}} at the top means these are rendered as you intended PamD. Betterkeks (talk) 09:05, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
The order is something a bot ought to take care of. Do you know one that does it? Betterkeks (talk) 11:51, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
No, and they are in the wrong order so often that I suspect that VE or Twinkle may be getting it wrong, sadly! PamD 18:53, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to join New pages patrol edit

Hello Betterkeks!

  • The New Pages Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
  • We think that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
  • If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.

quotation edit

The source you reverted says

Muharem Bazdulj, the winner of several literary and journalism awards, including ‘Stanislav Staša Marinković’ of the daily newspaper ‘Danas’ and ‘Bogdan Tirnanić’ of the Association of Journalists of Serbia, is a writer, journalist and literary translator.

Egeymi (talk) 05:49, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Egeymi: Which means ‘Bogdan Tirnanić’ is an award by the Association of Journalists of Serbia, which was one of several that Muharem Bazdulj has won. Betterkeks (talk) 05:53, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Instead of reverting you would correct the statement and the page would not be tagged as an unsourced page. Egeymi (talk) 05:52, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Egeymi: The inline citation you added does not support the sentence that you added. Please slow down, re-read the literature you’re citing, and add a sentence that IS supported by the source. Betterkeks (talk) 06:07, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024 edit

Hello Betterkeks,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
