Speedy deletion nomination of File:Campbell map.png

A tag has been placed on File:Campbell map.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted images or text borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. File copyright problem with File:Price.png

Thank you for uploading File:Price.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

Yes, but the maps are marked as being copyrighted at celticfamilymaps, and we've no way of knowing whether you are the owner or not. Also, who says celticfamilymaps is an acceptable scholarly source? I can be emailed at "info at celtic family maps dot com" to confirm that I am the copyright holder. The methodology involved in creating these maps is outlined at celticfamilymaps.com. To confirm the validity of these maps, the current telephone directory for the UK can be consulted. This directory is even available online at a number of locations including BT.com. You need to send a permission to OTRS, see the details here. If you are the owner of these images, you need to be prepared to release them under a free license. The website at the moment says "The maps appearing on this website are the sole copyright of the website owner and are not to be published elsewhere without his explit [sic] permission," which does not imply the release that Wikipedia requires. I've updated my website as follows: "The maps appearing on this website are the sole copyright of the website owner. However, they may be republished on a non profit bases where this website is clearly referenced.". Is this good enough? I believe that this makes it clear that wikipedia may use my maps. The thing is, I don't want my maps being used by people who seek to commercially benefit from the fact, since a lot of work has gone into producing them. With regards to the validity of the data I present, I believe that my maps can be validated to a reasonable extent, reasonably quickly. As an example for Campbell, a UK telephone directory can be consulted. This data is shared between providers so their data should be approximately the same. Online directories exist; bt.com for example. Consult a postcode map which is also available online. Choose a few random locations on this map and establish the number of people in this area with the Campbell name according to the directory. Establish the total population in this area. For example (using arbitrary values), lets say that Glasgow has 1000 Campbell's in the directory and London 2000. And lets say that Glasgow's population is 1 million, and London's is 10 million. Then, we can conclude that Glasgow has approximately 5 times more Campbells as a percentage of its local population than London has. This process can be repeated for a number of locations thereby establishing if my map is misleading or not. Please advise as to what I should do now in order to present my work on wikipedia, thanks. Unfortunately, this is still not acceptable as a free license image for Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials#Granting us permission to copy material already online for the licenses you may use, which are: Releasing your images into the Public Domain or licnesing them by the GFDL, CC-BY or the CC-BY-SA. OK, I understand. How about if I make versions of my maps which are of a suitable resolution for use on the wikipedia surname pages - somewhere around 150 pixels wide? And in turn, make these available both non-commercially and commercially. That way the images will be big enough to give a general idea as to the source of a surname. On the other hand, I will have larger images on my own website. Will it still be necessary for those who use my images to reference my website? Will wikipedia reference my website so that people can check out more detailed maps if they so desire? Thanks again! BarraOGriofa (talk) 20:50, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Yes, If you wish to make a lower resolution image and upload it by the CC-BY-SA (Probably the strongest for your purposes because no one will be able to use it without attributing you and will not be able to create derivative works or republish it unless also under the terms of the CC-BY-SA), you are free to. The attribution will be like all Wikipedia images such that when you click on the image, you will be brought to an image description page like the ones currently attached to the images. The page will say what it is, and while it will not promote your site, give a link to the exact page of the map and have a source saying something like "Barry Griffin, www.celticfamilymaps.com". Just be aware, that creating and licensing your images and maps doesn't automatically mean that the maps will be used or that they meet WP:RS. There is still the question over WP:OR - that is, you have created the maps yourself using unverifiable data and interpretation of data. --12:31, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

I've outlined above how the maps can be validated. The data is certainly verifiable since it is taken from the current British telephone records.

Unfortunately, that is not what Wikipedia means by verifiable. Verifiable means that it is traceable to a reliable source who attests to the validity of the methodology and results. A reliable source, in Wikipedia terms, is one that has some kind of formal checking process such as peer review or journalistic source checking. I cannot see that your site counts as a reliable source in these terms.

Have you now taken out an OTRS ticket or placed a suitable licence notice on your site? I can see neither at the moment. Failure to properly licence the images leaves them open to speedy deletion. SpinningSpark 11:47, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

• make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
• Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-enwikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-enwikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
