editHello, I'm Jeff G.. I noticed that you recently removed content from Steve Parker (writer) without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Hello Jeff. Thanks for the input. Steve Parker asked me to make the changes and upload the images, which relate directly to his Wikipedia page. Can the changes go live please? Thanks Simon AvocetCreative (talk) 10:58, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
Hello AvocetCreative. The nature of your edits, such as the one you made to Steve Parker (writer), gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.
Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.
Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:AvocetCreative. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=AvocetCreative|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}
. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. Longhair\talk 21:39, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
I have added entries for myself working intermittently for Steve Parker and an explanation that I have been paid for advice but not for adding content to Wikipedia. What do I need to do to unblock my account please? I cannot seem to make further changes to my own page or to my account name. Any advice would be great thanks Thank you AvocetCreative (talk) 09:53, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
Managing a conflict of interest
editHello, AvocetCreative. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Steve Parker (writer), you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam#External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. See also WP:ADVERT. — Jeff G. ツ 08:23, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for your message. I’m new to the Wikipedia rules so am a little unsure of my mistakes. i can do better. I had not intended to advertise. I understand i had made mistakes, i will not do this again. I am happy to comply with Wikipedia’s rules. I had been unaware of these. My only future edit would be to update Steve Parker’s entry where there is out of date information. I am happy for others to verify this or to ask for it to be added by someone else. I am not making edits intending to promote/advertise. The changes are made not for Steve but so that people that read the entry are reading up to date and correct information. If I have misunderstood or made other mistakes please say and I will change. I am trying to do what is right. What do I. need to do to unblock my account please? editYou may request a change of name and unblock if you intend to make useful contributions other than promoting your business or organization. To do this, first search Special:CentralAuth for available usernames that comply with the username policy. Once you have found an acceptable username, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}}
at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked. In your reasons, you must:
- Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure requirement.
- Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
- Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
{{unblock|Your reason here}}
at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page.
