I like how you added information in your lead about Gaines-Shelton being an author of the Harlem Renaissance--I think that Renaissance should be capitalized though! Also be careful to add a comma after the name of her school. Since there is a lot of information about her play, The Church Fight, I may recommend including a separate subheading for that work. I would remove the phrase "lesser-known" in your intro.

The wording in the biography section is a little awkward. Try: "Her mother died when Gaines was young. She was raised by her father and taken care of by the African American midwest community."

Your edits thus far have been minimal, but I'm sure you'll add more. I'd suggest giving The Church Fight it's own section and summarizing it.
