SPOKEN WORDS CANNOT BE RETRIEVED. Like time cannot be recovered when it is wasted, so are spoken words not retrieved once uttered. Words have negative effects on the speaker especially when they are not carefully chosen. As a speaker, always examine the content of your choice of words. One of the greatest ancient philosophers, Socrates, once said and I quote, ‘’an unexamined life is not worth living.’’ One who speaks without examining his choice of words is usually full of regrets.

A man once lived with his son in the house. He woke up one day and sent his son on series of errands. Out of tiredness, the poor boy demanded a little rest before he would go on another errand. The father who was uncharitable and insensitive to the plea of his son grew annoyed with him and began shouting and quarrelling. He even said, if I had power, I would have sacrificed you for rituals.’ Shortly later that very day, the poor boy was stung by snake and died in a pool of blood on his way to run his father’s last errand.

On hearing on the death of his son, the man was thrown in turmoil. He felt guilty and attempted suicide, imagining what the society would speak of him. With much regret he wished he could turn back the hands of time, it was too late to recant his words. This man was innocent of his son’s death but because he spoke carelessly to him (his son), the evil one took advantage of his utterances and brought calamity to the family. Scripture warns us in 1Peter 5:8-9 to be sober and vigilant. Our opponent, the devil, is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. We speak and talk to people carelessly showing little or no concern about the effects of what we say, and the devil uses that to destroy our relationships. The impossibility of turning back the hands of time is the same with that of taking back your words. You drop them rather easily but you can never retrieve them. So be very careful in choosing your words and when speaking to people.
