Latin name of Monash University

The Wikipedia article gave this Latin name as "Universitas Monasiana" until 22 April 2018, when you commented it out. Would you mind telling me your reason? I ask because editors on Vicipaedia (see today's la:Disputatio:Universitas Monasiana) are currently discussing this name, which, after some searching, I had been unable to confirm. All the Web sources seem to be Wikipedia mirrors, still drawing on the pre-April version of the English article as their source. Andrew Dalby 17:34, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

Anyway, evidence suggests you were correct to feel doubts about this Latin name, and I have now deleted it from the page. Andrew Dalby 11:13, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
I can't remember the exact reason. I often work on university articles and find a student (or such) has transliterated the university name into latin. Often I cannot find a source sugesting the university has never used a latin name. That was probably the case here, anyway looks like you sorted the problem. Aloneinthewild (talk) 00:36, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

Good reasoning

I also agree with that revert, excellent reasoning and suggestion. Mikecurry1 (talk) 20:05, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

Reply to your question concerning removal of rankings of certain German universities

Hello, I'm GCGOC. Thanks for your question on Nov. 3. University ranking is used usually to show a high standing of that university and not to humiliate them. Global ranking is quite controvertible, especially with regard to German universities. They are more of an advertisement than a reality or science. Currently, three German universities (Munich, TU Munich and Heidelberg) are always listed as the leading three German universities on the ranking lists without exception, which I highlighted respectively in the respective items - editors of these three universities might be proud of those rankings. However, rankings of the rest of the German universities are rather poor considering their de facto excellence - for instance, Berlin, Göttingen, Freiburg, Tübingen. Bonn, Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg etc. are not that bad as the rankings seemingly show. The reasons for their lower ranking are complicated. But highlighting their rankings as 100-200 or even 200-300 in such a uniform list would be unfair and far more disgraceful than respectable (or even stigmatising) for these universities. One shouldn't force others to play a biased game with oneself. In short, there are sufficient reasons for German universities not to take their lower standing in such rankings made in the UK or the US or China for serious - I guess most members of those universities would agree with me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GCGOC (talkcontribs) 13:40, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

GCGOC while I understand your sentiment (German universities are great, and sometimes the rankings don't represent this). You cant just remove these templates without discussion. I would suggest talking to WP:UNI and WP:GERMANY if you really feel this is a problem. A better solution might be to display the national rankings of German universities alongside the world rankings. It would be better to explain the reason for the low rankings than censor the information. I;m not sure the German universities care enough that these rankings are far more disgraceful than respectable (or even stigmatising) otherwise they would have complained in the media. Woroni

Hi Aloneinthewild--

I have been closely involved with the organisation Woroni and I would appreciate it if you could leave the list of editors in place. It is not unnecessary information. With this organisation, the history of elected editors is very important information.

Per WP:LISTPEOPLE, lists such as this are only included if they include notable people. None of the people you are adding show this. This content is more suitable for a personal website of the paper, rather than Wikipedia which is an encyclopedia. Aloneinthewild (talk) 16:06, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

File:University of Nottingham Students' Union logo.jpg

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of British universities, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Peter Mathieson (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Removal of WP:BOOST violating information on the University of Oxford page

I'd like to draw your attention to WP:BOOST guidelines found at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Avoid_academic_boosterism

"The university is ranked first globally by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings as of 2019[20] and is consistently ranked as among the world's top ten universities[21][22]. It is currently ranked second in all major national league tables, behind Cambridge."

Category:Glyndŵr University

Hi, I see you moved the Glyndŵr University page to Wrexham Glyndŵr University in 2016. Should I move Category:Glyndŵr University as well or did you decide that there was a reason for keeping the old category? TSventon (talk) 20:12, 23 September 2019 (UTC)

No reason, I hadn't thought about moving it. I don't see it being be a problem --Aloneinthewild (talk) 11:11, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, will do. On a slightly related topic, do you know anything about Category:Universities in England by county? Or do you know who might know? I find it odd to classify most universities in Category:Universities in England and some by county. TSventon (talk) 12:13, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
I just know that some of those categories have existed for as long as I remember. It's a bit of a halfway house at the moment, all the universities should be subcat'ed if we are using that model.--Aloneinthewild (talk) 13:52, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, I will probably propose making "Universities in England by county" a non diffusing subcategory on the talk page. At the moment Yorkshire seems to be pre 1974, West Midlands post 1974 and London largely missing. TSventon (talk) 15:55, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
Agree that Yorkshire could probably be better split to the modern four counties, if you were to propose that Aloneinthewild (talk) 09:35, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks again, I have started a conversation on "Universities in England to avoid going into any more detail on your talk page. TSventon (talk) 08:34, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

King's College London, United Kingdom

Can I ask why you reverted the removal of United Kingdom from the lead of King's College London? Your edit summary was not clear. Its inclusion doesn't appear to be supported by WP:PLACE. Thanks, Beevil (talk) 09:44, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

I don't think PLACE is the correct guideline to quote here, that is for article titles. Usually the lead sentence should give information in plain language, while it might be common knowledge to you and me that the university is in London, UK, it is better to state the fact. Note that the IP didn't give an edit summary either to remove this information Aloneinthewild (talk) 09:53, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
Fair enough, thanks. I hadn't registered WP:Place was specifically for titles, my mistake! Beevil (talk) 12:43, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:University of Dundee blue logo.svg

Thank you for uploading File:University of Dundee blue logo.svg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Speedy deletion nomination of File:CULRC logo.png

A tag has been placed on File:CULRC logo.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
