My RfA edit

Cheers for the kind words on my talk page. I am obviously disappointed, but I got a lot of good constructive criticism from the process which can only be an improvement for me. Who knows, in the coming months after I've incorporated all this advice I may be successful. Cheers! Mark t young (talk) 20:50, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

No need to apologize. :) Your edit is in the page history, and can easily be restored. I'm not sure why you thought I'd want to block you, however: you haven't done anything that requires a block. Acalamari 15:50, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Eh, many people have voted on RfAs before they were transcluded, so don't worry about it: they were just advised about pre-transclusion voting, and moved on from the matter. What you did is not a big deal: don't let it bother you. Acalamari 16:23, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rollback edit

No, thank you. I apologise for archiving it; the bot's inactive because ST47 retired, so I archive on sight. Sorry if it seemed too quick; I should have left it longer. Completely my fault there. I shared your concerns about the statement, but he's experienced and trustworthy, and won't abuse the tool I feel. Apologies again for "cutting in" as it were; it wasn't my intention. Thanks for the note as well. :) Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 20:57, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Don't apologize. :) Thanks again. Acalamari 21:00, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rollbacker edit

Sure, I'll try to remember.

Out of curiousity, what's the purpose of removing rollbacker rights? Is there any harm in the redundancy? Is it just a matter of principled (or, perhaps, neurotic) opposition to clutter? I'm certainly sympathetic to neuroses -- I have plenty of my own -- and removing the rollback flag when granting the sysop flag is easy enough for me to do, but I'm still curious. Kind regards — Dan | talk 19:20, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

In all fairness, I personally don't have any problem with keeping a user with "rollbacker, sysop" groups combined, and there isn't any harm in keeping them together. However, there do seem to be a lot of users who believe it's more organized and less cluttery (is that a word?) to keep sysops and rollbackers separate, and that users with the former right grouped with the latter make it harder to keep track of everyone who has rollback. In addition, some admins also remove the rollback right from admins who are in that group, therefore filling the userrights log with useless entries. I hope this explanation is satisfactory. Acalamari 19:28, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Certainly it is. Many thanks. — Dan | talk 19:33, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of Cabal edit

Thanks. But I'm tarnished forever. Shapiros10 contact meMy work 23:36, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome. Listen, don't worry about being "tarnished": the page was a mistake, and if you learn from the mistake, people will forgive you. Take some advice: don't drag the age-battle on any longer. By keeping it going, you're not only affecting yourself, but also all the mature 12-14 year olds out there. Look at Ryan: keeping his RfA going would have achieved nothing but continued arguing and other problems, so he withdrew it. Instead of dealing with Wiki-politics, just go and edit the mainspace. Find some topics you like, and work on them. You'll find that much, much more satisfying than arguing with people at WT:RFA. Go on, see what I mean. Best wishes. Thanks. But the "bedtime" comment just ticked me off like it would if someone calle my mother a prostitute. Shapiros10 contact meMy work 23:43, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
A year ago, it probably would have done the same to me, but rather than getting offended, nowadays a comment like that would amuse me. I don't agree with it, but it amuses me rather than angers me. You're welcome for my input in the matter. I do hope that that group of editors will move on from this incident, rather than continue it. I learned long ago that it's better to engage in civil discussion, or even back away, rather than drag something on. Thank you to you as well for your help too. :) Acalamari 00:03, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Request for Rollback Feature edit

Hello Acalamari, I am here to ask if you could grant me the rollback feature. I've been contributing to Wikipedia for a while and have improved my contributions in order for you to grant me this right. I've been helping as much as I can and I have even acquired a anti-vandal tool that can be used by non-admins, with this I was able to help the fight against vandalism. I then tried to use Huggle but I discovered that I would need a rollback feature that either you or Wikipedia can grant me. I think it would be faster and easier if I could just ask you. I hope you trust me with this responsibility, goodbye. Joseosoria (talk) 14:14, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Given what else you've already noticed about this acount Acalmari, looking at the earliest parts of this appears relevant. GRBerry 17:57, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't think that will help the above user's case in wondering why they were autoblocked, and saying that they're not a sock(puppeteer). Good find, GRBerry. Acalamari 18:06, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Haha - we should all self nominate candidates more often :P And thanks for vindicating me - this is precisely what I meant :) I really can't blame someone who isn't a regular to RfA for not realising to remove it, regardless of what the instructions say. --Naerii 21:41, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey, it seems even the "regulars" aren't always familiar with the self-nomination instructions, and anyway, it's not exactly hard to create an RfA without reading the instructions. :) Best wishes. Acalamari 21:48, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rollback offer edit

Hi, and thanks for the offer of rollback capability! I hadn't really looked into it as a tool, but having followed a link from your page to read about it, I do think it would be handy. I have occasionally had to do a bit of digging to get rid of a series of vandal edits to one of the Madeleine L'Engle or James Thurber-related pages, to say nothing of A Christmas Story when it's in season. Some of these IP kids will make half a dozen or more edits before getting bored, and if someone else make an edit in the middle of all that, it can get messy. (A whole section of Thurber's biography was blanked for at least a month because of something like that, and me not noticing.) So yes indeed - please and thank you! --Karen | Talk | contribs 01:43, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Removal of rollbacker rights edit

Hi - thanks for the message. Has it become standard practice to remove these rights when making a user an administrator? The last discussion I saw on the topic concluded that there was little need and while some bureaucrats were doing it, others weren't, and there was no real need to standardise. However, if it has become standard, I've no problem with doing it too. Warofdreams talk 23:07, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, overall, it is up to the discretion of the promoting bureaucrat whether to remove redundant rights or not, as there is nothing official to address this. I myself don't have any problem in keeping a user with "rollbacker, sysop" groups combined, as there isn't any direct harm in keeping them together. However, there do seem to be a lot of users who believe it's more organized and less cluttery to keep sysops and rollbackers/accountcreators/ip-block-exempts separate, and that users with the former right grouped with the latter make it harder to keep track of everyone who has rollbackaccountcreator/ip-block-exempt. In addition, some admins also remove the redundant rights from sysops who are in those groups, therefore filling the userrights log with useless entries. I hope this explanation is to your satisfaction. Acalamari 23:15, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rollback requests edit

Hello. I see you grant rollback to users. Well, I just thought that you could use this. It's pretty useful when notifying users that you have approved rollback to someone. Of course you can add it to your own user space and reword it and make changes. It's just a suggestion that I thought would be helpful to you. Thanks, RyRy (talk) 02:07, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yep, I grant rollback to users (some 400+ now, I think I've granted rollback to). :) I've used that template before, but I'm planning to make my own template for when I answer requests at RfR. I also created Template:Rollbackgiven some time ago. Thanks! Acalamari 02:10, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
That seems good too. Your welcome. Oh, and I was just recently granted rollback yesterday (UTC). I was wondering if you would be able to review my rollback edits in my contributions, just to make sure I am using the tool correctly. Is that okay with you? Thanks in advance. :D -- RyRy (talk) 02:13, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I reviewed a few reverts at random, and they all looked good to me. If you keep this up, you won't have rollback taken from you again. I'm glad you've learned from past mistakes regarding rollback. Acalamari 02:17, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I appreciate it, and I'll do my best to use it correctly. You know about my past mistakes? I don't think I have ever encountered you... or did you just check my user rights log. :P -- RyRy (talk) 02:21, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Question regarding rollback edit

Hi, you granted me rollback recently and I have a question regarding the use of the tool. Am I allowed to rollback edits such as these The vast majority of the edits appear to be blanking characters that do exist on the show, but a couple appear to possibly be constructive. What am I supposed to do in this situation? Cheers Landon1980 (talk) 19:50, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Unexplained blanking of sections can be considered vandalism, but when in doubt, it may be best to use Twinkle's rollback with an appropriate edit summary. (i.e. rv unexplained removal of content). –xenocidic (talk) 19:54, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok thanks, I haven't installed Twinkle, so I just cut and pasted to the last version by User:Frickative Landon1980 (talk) 20:13, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
k. an easy way to do that is to view the old version, edit it, put an appropriate edit summary, and save. –xenocidic (talk) 20:17, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Shakira edit

My apologies. I was intent upon following along a group of edits made by an editor whose sole interest appears to be regarding inserting and changing material related to bare feet. The editor (Anodice) removed a large number of wikilinks to barefoot, inserted additions that state that some people are always barefooted without sourcing, and in the Shakira article, changed a sentence that isn't supported by the source. It's curious that this new editor was making many of the same (duplicate) changes that I'd followed up before by another new editor (G-Surf), who also only made edits regarding barefeet. I suspect a sock puppet, but since G-Surf made no more edits after the ones in June, I'm more concerned with removing the unsupported changes being added. I noticed this because of changes on Janis Joplin, referring to her "famously appearing barefoot." Joplin did a lot of famous things, but going barefoot wasn't something she did famously. I somehow didn't realize that other changes were made to Shakira, and I've fixed that. Again, my apologies. Wildhartlivie (talk) 23:36, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, no need to apologize. :) It's just that I didn't know what you fixed, and I had no intention of getting into any revert-wars or anything like that: in all, it was easier to ask you. Thank you for reverting, and then fixing the problem manually. Thanks also for the explanation. Best wishes. Acalamari 23:40, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
No problem. This is actually the first foot fetishist I've come across in nearly two years on Wikipedia. It's a bit amusing and at the same time frustrating!!! Wildhartlivie (talk) 23:43, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Interesting situation. :) See you around! Acalamari 23:47, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

RFR talk edit

Hey !squid, I replied to your post here. Cheers! Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 23:52, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

And actually, a new bot is taking over the "archiving". We should find out the timeframe for how long they sit before being archived. It's User:SoxBot X. Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 23:54, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Heh, "!squid"...good one! :) Yes, I've seen your message. I did have a response written up, but I'll have to write it again. Redgarding the new bot, I hope that the bot waits for 5-10 minutes before archiving: I find the fast-archiving annoying, and sometimes, discussions are needed. Thanks! :) Acalamari 23:57, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rollback Request Problem edit

A rollback request was recently approved for User:Adolphus79.Apparently User:Adolphus79 has had some difficulty with users from my ip block, and I was trying to improve an article he had marked for deletion Jackahuahua, to help the Wikipedia process and try to restore a little faith to him for my ip block. I recently almost got into a edit war with this user on the article Jackahuahua. It was a minor edit, but I was just trying to improve the article. Instead of having the war continue I talked to him on his talk page. User:Adolphus79 seems to be a great user and has made a lot of good edits and contributed widely to Wikipedia, and I do think the project is better off with him, but by reviewing his edits, he seems to get in roll back fights with quite a few users. Some of this fights seem to be over legit edits that he just doesn't seem to 'like' as seen in List_of_wineries_and_vineyards_in_Maine. My question is, is it fair that a non-administrator who seems to get in frequent edit wars have the rollback ability? I'm afraid he might use this ability to fight things other then vandalism. He seems to have enough edits and experience to rather pursue this feature by becoming an admin, and I think he might be a good candidate for an admin. Just my 2 cents. Thanks 204.108.8.5 (talk) 19:50, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rollback should be used to revert vandalism/spam, and should not be used to revert war with other users or to revert good-faith edits. I looked at Adolphus79's recent rollbacks, and all of them looked correct to me (i.e. reverted vandalism with it). Can you please provide diffs regarding misuse of the rollback feature? I couldn't find any, and I'll be able to help you more if you provide diffs for me. Also remember that edits that are reverted without the use of rollback do not count as misuse of rollback. Thanks. Acalamari 20:21, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm sort of new to the whole wikipedia process, so how can I tell if the edit used the rollback function? I wasn't aware you could tell the difference between an automated rollback and a manual one and was confused by the process. If he's not misusing it I think its only fair he keep unless he displays misuse of the feature. Thanks for your help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.108.8.5 (talk)
Take a look at the edit summary for this edit: note how it says "Reverted edits by {user1} to last version by {user2}". That is an example of a revert using rollback; the edit summary is automatically generated. This, however, is a revert without using rollback, and notice how the edit summary appears to be manually typed rather than automatically generated. If you haven't already, I suggest reading Wikipedia:Rollback feature and Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback for more information. I hope this helps. Acalamari 16:30, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

WP:HAU, Status, and you! edit

As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible) system - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at WT:HAU. This message was delivered by xenobot 22:38, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey I need help! edit

Hey Acalamari. I need help trying to find things to edit or find vandalism but the bots always get to it first. Also I was wondering if you could grant me rollback features! Thanks! My Account (talk) 23:21, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

"My Account", it's not a good idea to ask a different admin to do something when you've already been declined by another one. This is known as forum shopping and strongly discouraged. If you install Twinkle, you may be able to beat those anti-vandal bots, or you can consider improving articles in other ways. See Category:Wikipedia cleanup categories for various categories that house articles that require some sort of cleanup. –xenocidic (talk) 23:25, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hey Xenocidic I'm sorry. Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by My Account (talkcontribs) 23:35, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi My Account, I wasn't going to grant rollback, as I'd already seen your request at RfR get declined, and it wouldn't be a good idea for me to overturn another admins' decision like that. If you want to combat vandalism, I first suggest reading Wikipedia:Vandalism for information about vandalism; take a look at the undo feature; and also visit Special:RecentChanges to see the latest edits being made, of which some will unfortunately be vandalism, but will give you a chance to find vandalism and revert it. After practicing reverting for a week or two, re-apply for rollback rights then. I hope this helps. Acalamari 23:55, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

The traditional rfa thank you message edit

  Thank you for the support!
Acalamari, it is my honor to report that thanks in part to your support my third request for adminship passed (80/18/2). I appreciate the trust you and the WP community have in me, and I will endeovour to put my newly acquired mop and bucket to work for the community as a whole. Yours sincerly and respectfuly, TomStar81 (Talk) 03:05, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I Got a Question edit

Acalamari could you request yourself to be a Bureaucrat because I think you should! Isn't Bureaucracy like the best promotion you can get in Wikipedia? I think you should go for it if you can because are the fairest person ever and I don't think a single person would object to it. Well anyway I think you should totally go for it! My Account (talk) 22:51, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the confidence, but I have no intention of running for bureaucratship right now. I'll explain why:
  1. I ran for bureaucratship back in February. I withdrew it after 4 hours at 27/7/2. While I had a lot of supporters quickly, opposition was also high, especially for an RfB. In addition, some of the opposition had legitimate and decent reasons, and more opposition would have come in.
  2. There's an unofficial "waiting period" between RfAs/RfBs. There's often 3 months between RfAs and 6 months between RfBs, and that six month wait is not yet over.
  3. I only recently reached the "one year as an admin rule" that some people use as a criteria for RfBs.
  4. I am not going to self-nominate again. I'll only be running for RfB if someone I respect a lot is willing to nominate me..
As I said, thanks for the confidence, but I don't think it would be a good idea for me to run for bureaucratship at this time. I'd easily do better in an RfB now than 5 months ago, but probably not enough to pass. Acalamari 23:08, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Maybe around the holidays? Shapiros10 contact meMy work 23:13, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Technically, it's already the holidays (summertime), but if you're referring to November/December, I'm not going to "set" a time to run. I'm not "aiming" to become a bureaucrat, the same way that it's best not to "aim" for adminship. Anyway, if you count Wikipedia:Requests for bureaucratship/EVula 3, I've already been heavily involved in an RfB recently. :) Acalamari 23:21, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
5. Squids are rarely promoted above rollbacker, let alone sysop. <ducks> –xenocidic (talk) 23:15, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Doesn't apply here, I was never a rollbacker. :D Acalamari 23:21, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I didn't say to I said above ! Happy belated asb, by the way. –xenocidic (talk) 23:23, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Meh, either way, still doesn't apply. :) Acalamari 23:25, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
