Hi! I saw your question here. It's definitely OK to change your article topic, although I would recommend talking to your instructor so they're aware of the changes.

It looks like you wanted to edit 1st Cavalry Regiment (United States), however I do notice that this article is fairly lengthy on the topic. What I recommend is reviewing the articles listed at Category:American Civil War stubs, as these are all article topics that could be expanded. For example, the slogan brother against brother could be expanded.
