For Scuttling of the German fleet at Scapa Flow, I have acknowledged your edits and WP:OVERLINK. However, there are usually links to countries in infoboxes for quick access for the reader. Thanks for your contribs, and stay safe.Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 17:39, 19 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the welcome and for the partial change. It isn't all that big of a deal but you are wrong about links in infoboxes. I'm curious to know where you get the idea that "there are usually links to countries in infoboxes". Have you counted? In the absence of hard information that this is right, I'd go with the Manual of Style. --84.64.249.140 (talk) 20:10, 19 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi there! See American Theater (World War II). In the infobox, there are links to not countries but also well-known places such as the Pacific Ocean. This is just a habit for some editors to put links to even very well-known things in infoboxes. Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 01:57, 20 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Oh yes, it's easy to find individual examples of this mistake; Scuttling of the German fleet at Scapa Flow currently has it too. But you said "usually" so I wondered if you had some statistics at your fingertips. Editors' habits are a thing; some people like to improve articles, adding information, improving sourcing, or making them more readable. Others do less helpful things like trying to make everything in an infobox turn blue because it "looks nice" (to them). Again, I'd probably be guided by the MoS in this area as that is what it is for. --84.64.249.140 (talk) 10:11, 20 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi again. I usually edit tropical cyclone pages, since that is my main interest. In the {{infobox hurricane}}, editors usually link to countries or well known places (such as Eastern Canada or New York). Though, according to you, is a mistake as per WP:MoS. However, even administrators working with WikiProject Tropical Cyclones link to countries and well-known things. I personally do not think linking to well-known stuff in infoboxes is violating the MoS, though you may think otherwise. Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 13:16, 20 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Cool. I was thinking of the bit where it says the following are usually not linked: ... The names of subjects with which most readers will be at least somewhat familiar. This generally includes major examples of: countries (e.g., Japan/Japanese, Brazil/Brazilian) (my emphasis)
It seems obvious that Scotland is a country and falls under this. Again, someone with a burning desire to find out more about Scotland has the very easy recourse of clicking either of the other geographical terms linked prominently in the lead. Links need to be used judiciously because there is evidence that having many low-value links discourages people from clicking the high-value ones. This link has no value and so should not be made. --84.64.249.140 (talk) 14:22, 20 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes, correct. Scotland is a country, and the MoS says that The names of subjects with which most readers will be at least somewhat familiar [should not be linked]. This generally includes major examples of: countries (e.g., Japan/Japanese, Brazil/Brazilian); geographic features (e.g., the Himalayas, Pacific Ocean, South America); locations (e.g., Berlin; New York City, or just New York if the city context is already clear; London, if the context rules out London, Ontario; Southeast Asia); languages (e.g., English, Arabic, Korean, Spanish); nationalities and ethnicities (e.g., English, British, Chinese, Turkish, African-American, Hispanic); religions (e.g., Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism). Thanks for teaching me about WP:Overlinking, and I hope you continue to contribute to Wikipedia and consider creating an account. ~ Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 15:38, 20 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
