Gerald Hyland

edit

Hello, I happened to notice your edit here, and was trying to figure out what location you meant by "Alexandria (in Fairfax County)". I don't edit the article Gerald Hyland, and plead ignorance to the subject, so please forgive me if this sounds like a very uninformed guess, but did you perhaps mean New Alexandria, Virginia? Just trying to get the information right. Thanks, Hamamelis (talk) 03:22, 8 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

There is a place called "Alexandria" in Fairfax County that is not the same as Alexandria city. I wanted to make that clear. Frankly I'm not sure whether "New Alexandria" (which I've heard of) is the same as this other neighborhood/region/place called "Alexandria". But it certainly might be. Good luck! 68.84.8.78 (talk) 03:46, 8 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I posted this here. Maybe they'll come up with some answers. Hamamelis (talk) 06:47, 8 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • I do believe you are getting the Alexandria thing mixed up. It is possible for someone to have the address "Alexandria, Virginia", but live in Fairfax County, but it does not mean that Alexandria is in Fairfax County. There is a similar situation in Frederick County, Virginia, where Winchester, Virginia (an Independent City) is the county seat. One can go to Shawnee Land, Virginia, some 20 miles away from Winchester, clearly in Frederick County and have the address "Winchester, Virginia". In fact, most of Northern and Western Frederick County is addressed as "Winchester, Virginia". This is in no way makes Winchester part of Frederick County. This is just where the people get the mail, a zip code. Since there isn't a incorporated town called New Alexandria, Virginia in that area (just an unincorporated community in a census-designated place), the USPS puts the people in "Alexandria, Virginia" for mail service, it's only an address. Fairfax County does have jurisdiction over those people in that area of "Alexandria, Virginia" (just the address) but it does not make them technical "Alexandrians". Virginia is a VERY tricky state when it comes to stuff like this. I have lived here all my life, 30 years, and I still don't understand half of it. But to clarify, no part of Alexandria, Virginia is in Fairfax County, the part in Fairfax County is just an address, nothing more...a situation that happens in many, many, many other places in Virginia. - NeutralhomerTalk14:51, 8 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Neutralhomer, I'm not mixed up. I know about postal city names, and I know that Alexandria City is not part of Fairfax County. I have had the address of Alexandria but lived outside of it before (Lincolnia), and I currently reside in Alexandria city proper. So, I'm pretty well versed in these things too =) The Mount Vernon district, which is what Mr. Hyland represents, is part of Fairfax County (see http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/maps/images/maps/bosdist/bos_maps/mtvernon_district_map.pdf) and does NOT include any part of Alexandria City. Further, Alexandria is a city, not a "town". I can pretty confidently claim that Mr. Hyland is NOT a representative of Alexandria city (where I live), and I can most decidedly say he is not a representative of "Alexandria town". The only reason I left any reference at all to "Alexandria" is that I've seen other pages that referenced a "New Alexandria" in Fairfax County (part of Belle Haven which is indeed in Fairfax County's Mount Vernon district), south of Alexandria City, but given that "New Alexandria" is part of Belle Haven which is part of the Mount Vernon district, it's probably not even worth mentioning. 68.84.8.78 (talk) 17:20, 13 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
