Gallipoli Memorial Wattle Grove
On 7 September 1915, the Australian Wattle Day League's Gallipoli Memorial Wattle Grove, the first national memorial commemorating the 25 April landing,[1][2] was inaugurated in the Adelaide Park Lands, South Australia. His Excellency Governor-General Ronald Munro Ferguson unveiled its central feature - the 'Australasian Soldiers Dardanelles April 25th, 1915' granite obelisk (now known as the Dardanelles Cenotaph), paid tribute to the late Major General Sir William Throsby Bridges, and also dedicated the grove in which the Governor-General, Her Excellency Lady Helen Munro Ferguson, Sir Henry and Lady Galway, the Premier (Mr. C. Vaughan), Mayor of Adelaide, and soldiers' families and friends planted trees.[3][4]
H.E. Governor-General Ronald Munro Ferguson:
The Wattle Day League, by its initiative, had caused Adelaide to be the first city in the Commonwealth to erect a memorial to the landing of the troops at Gallipoli, and he had great pleasure in unveiling the obelisk. [5]
The Gallipoli Grove, its Cenotaph, octagonal pergola, pathways and fencing were constructed by the League and Walter Torode, master-builder of Wayville, South Australia, soon after his 1914 construction of the uniquely octagonal-designed Amphi Cosma,[6][7] at Wayville[8] with public donations of materials and labour. To make it 'thoroughly national' Torode suggested that the grove be of wattles.[9][10]
In Torode's design the date of the Gallipoli landing was symbolised by four quadrants each planted with 25 species of wattles. The rough-hewn obelisk signified the rugged slopes, and sentinel native pines represented the Allies.[11]
For the 1916 anniversary observances the placing of floral and other memorial tributes on the Cenotaph was facilitated by the League, under the supervision of Mr. Walter C. Torode.[12]
A number of wreaths were affixed to the obelisk by mothers and other relatives of deceased soldiers, and to each was attached an inscription... In spite of the inclement weather, the grove was visited at intervals during the day by those who were evidently interested in the soldiers whom it was intended to commemorate, and who doubtless felt it their duty to pay due homage to those who had fallen.[13]
