My Mid-Term Quiz for LIBY 1210-09 Winter 2017

My Research Topic is: What is the significance of Aztec Religion in American life?

Key words related to my Research Topic are:Aztec Religion

Part 1:

Examine Wikipedia articles that are directly related to your Research Topic and select a substantive article to evaluate. This could be an article about an idea (e.g., I might choose the one about Trance) or a person (if I were researching Reggae music, I might pick Bob Marley). Answer the following questions:

I chose to read and evaluate the article titled: (for extra credit, link the name of the article to the article in Wikipedia.) Mesoamerican religion

1. Is there a warning banner at the top of the article? Yes

If there is a warning banner, copy and paste the warning banner here.

This article may require cleanup to meet Wikipedia's quality standards. The specific problem is: writing is unclear, difficult to understand, and "chatty" in style Please help improve this article if you can. (March 2013) (Learn how and when to remove this template message)

Write an brief explanation of the reason the issues mentioned in the warning banner are important. For example, if the issue is “needs additional citations for verification,” why does that matter?- Its not written professionally as it should be.

Please note: If the article you are evaluating does not have a warning banner, choose a warning banner from a different article and explain the warning that is in that banner.

2. Is the lead section of the article easy to understand? Does it summarize the key points of the article? - The article goes to one subject to another without the full explanation.

3. Is the structure of the article clear? “Are there several headings and subheadings, images and diagrams at appropriate places, and appendices and foonotes at the end?”- There is only one image and the headings don't even mention about it. I feel that the article isn't clear because everything is just all over the place.

4. Are “the various aspects of the topic balanced well”? That is does it seem to provide a comprehensive overview of the topic?- The various aspects of the topic is not balanced at all. For example, the Pantheon which gives you a dozen of god and goddesses from Aztec, Mayan, and Mixtec witch a description. The thing that confuses me is that does the description apply to all in the column?

5. Does the article provide a “neutral point of view”? Does it read like an encyclopedia article instead of a persuasive essay?- It does provide a neutral point of view and reads like an encyclopedia article yet it does need to be structure well.

6. Are the references and footnotes citing reliable sources? Do they point to scholarly and trustworthy information? Beware of references to blogs; look for references to books, scholarly journal articles, government sources, etc.- The references are not really reliable to the Aztec Religion but rather stuff about the Mayans so I wouldn't say its trustworthy information.

7. Look for these signs of bad quality and comment on their presence or absence from the article you are evaluating: - "The importance of time is seen in the cycles of life, death and regeneration, which are something worshiped in almost everything existing. Time itself, is symbolized in the cycle of the sun, both because the sun separates night and day, and also because the death and regeneration of the sun itself is the reason for a new era." There are some bad grammars in this quote from the article

a. is the lead section well-written, in clear, correct English? - It's not really well written because it does have a few grammar issues and isn't clear.

b. are there “unsourced opinions” and/or “value statements which are not neutral”? -

c. does the article refer “to ‘some,’ ‘many,’ or other unnamed groups of people,” instead of specific organizations or authors or facts? - The article refers to many other groups rather than just Aztec.

d. does the article seem to omit aspects of the topic? - The article doesn't omit the aspect of the topic but it is hardly mention.

e. are some sections overly long compared to other sections of similar importance to the topic? -

f. does the article lack sufficient references or footnotes? - The article does lack sufficient reference towards the topic Aztec Religion

g. Look at the “View History” for the article. As you read the conversation there, do you see hostile dialogue or other evidence of lack of respectful treatment among the editors? - That it needs fixing.
