IRS Locomotives are standard locomotives, that British locomotive factories built for British India in the 1930s. The name is derived from Indian Railway Standard (IRS).

History edit

IRS Series edit

The series names consisted of a prefix for the Track width and another letter together. Unlike the BESA locomotives, the letter no longer had any self-sentient meaning. The following prefixes were used for the gauge designation:

  • X for Indian broad gauge
  • Y for meter gauge
  • Z for 76 cm gauge
  • Q for 60 cm gauge
