Liam James Sorenson (born July 24, 2001) is a Canadian who ran unsuccessfully in 2021 as Mayor of Barrhead, Alberta.

Early life and education

Sorenson was born on July 24, 2001 in Hinton, Alberta, Canada. He is the eldest son of James Sorenson and Maureen Barclay. He has two younger brothers (Cyrus and Ryan) who were born in 2002 and 2004. He attended Barrhead Composite High School in Barrhead from 2014 to 2020. He works as a janitor for a local custodial company since 2022. He worked for a local hockey team from 2019 to 2023. He was a member of the 526 Barrhead Air Cadets from 2014 to 2017 and attained the rank of corporal. He was involved with school sports by volunteering as a scorekeeper and team manager for his high school's JV boys basketball team from 2017 to 2019. He previously applied to the Naval Reserves in 2020 but was unsuccessful. During his time in high school, he was nicknamed The Man for his knowledge, skills and commitment.

Political career

Early political career

He worked on a federal political campaign in 2019. His first federal political campaign was his local MP's re-election campaign. He ran unsuccessfully as class president in 2020 during his senior year. He joined multiple political parties on different occasions both provincial and federal. He considered running for MP or MLA in Alberta but decided not to do so yet. In 2023, he considered running for MLA for Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock but decided to not do it.

2021 Barrhead Mayoral Election

He announced his candidacy for Mayor of Barrhead, Alberta on July 21, 2021 to be the next Mayor of Barrhead.[1] He got 207 votes (15.5%) while his opponent got 1,129 votes (84.5%).[2] He lost to incumbent Mayor Dave McKenzie on October 18, 2021. He was the youngest person to run in Barrhead history at the age of 20.

Personal life

He has asthma since he was a infant. He was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 15. He has been hospitalized throughout his life for numerous reasons. He lost three grandparents, one on August 15, 2013 and two in the same year on February 19, 2018 and on September 3, 2018. He has Scottish, French, Irish, Italian and English heritage on his mother's side of the family. He has Norwegian and Métis heritage on his father's side of the family. He met Milan Lucic on February 4, 2022 after his local hockey team won.

He lives in Barrhead, Alberta since 2004. He previously lived in Jasper, Alberta from 2001 to 2004 and Hinton for a few months in 2001.

He has never been in any relationships ever. He has had some love interests in high school that never gotten further.
