The Housing Authority of Milwaukee offers different ways for residents to apply for homeownership. Section 8 housing is a rent voucher program that allows a resident to find a house, townhouse or apartment to pay for all or a portion of the rent.
The requirements for section 8 for Milwaukee:
1. Receive rent assistance through the City of Milwaukee’s Housing Choice Voucher Program.
2. Be employed full time (average of 30 hours per week) and have earned income of at least $15,000 per year (unless age 62 or older or disabled).
3. Be a first time homebuyer or not have owned property in the past three years (unless displaced through death or divorce).
4. Be current with rent and compliant with all lease obligations.
Section 32 housing is for is for Milwaukee residents whom are living or want to live in public housing. Residents can get grants or subsidies to help pay the purchase price or put a down payment.
The requirements for section 32 for Milwaukee:
1. Have an income of at least $15,000 per year. 2. Currently live in a HACM public housing unit. 3. Have income that is at or below 80% of the median county income.
4. Be a first time homebuyer or not have owned property in the past three years (unless displaced through death or divorce). 5. Be current with rent and compliant with all lease obligations. 6. Forgivable second mortgages, up to $25,000, are only available to eligble buyers who purchase a HACM home.
