Senator Mike Lee
edit

Boyd met Mike Lee in 2003 when Matheson moved into the same neighborhood as the Lee family. In the following years, Matheson and Lee's paths would cross through community and political functions. During this time, Matheson became known as a trusted communicator by Lee. When Mike Lee decided to run for Bob Bennett's Utah Senate seat in 2010, he asked Matheson to be his communications director[7]. Mike Lee said, "I knew that his distinctive vision for the future, his commitment to positive reform, and his unparalleled gifts for communication would provide my campaign with the direction, clarity of purpose, and optimism it would need to have any chance of success."[8] After helping steer Lee's campaign to victory that November, Matheson opted to stay in Utah and continue his career as a businessman and consultant.

After nearly a year in Washington D.C., Lee decided to again ask Matheson to join his staff. On December 5, 2011, he called Matheson and asked him to be his State director. Lee recalls, "When I called Boyd to offer him the job, I was at the airport in Salt Lake City traveling back to Washington after a weekend at home with my family. After a few minutes of small talk and catching up on the phone, Boyd asked me where I was at the moment. I told him I was at the airport. ‘‘Me too,’’ he said, adding that he was on his way to Bangkok. ‘‘Which airport?’’ ‘‘Salt Lake City,’’ I replied. ‘‘Me too,’’ said Boyd. ‘‘Which concourse,’’ he asked. ‘‘D,’’ I said. ‘‘Me too,’’ Boyd repeated again. ‘‘Which gate,’’ Boyd asked, as we both started looking around the crowded terminal. Before I could respond, we had both spotted each other sitting with only a few chairs between us in the waiting area adjacent to gate 6."[9] Seeing that chance encounter at the airport as an inspired connection, Matheson took the job.

Matheson served on Senator Lee's staff, eventually becoming Chief of Staff in 2012. In 2015, it was announced that Matheson would move back to Utah to work on the Senator's re-election campaign. After another successful election, Matheson was named President of Sutherland Institute, a public policy think tank in Salt Lake City, Utah.
