There 197 countries today. But some regions fight for independence, a reason that this number could change. If I counted some territories it might go up to kinda 215.
Moving on, there are some countries that where fresh from its independence. Example is South Sudan, an African country, became independent in July 9, 2011. In the first years 90's there were 15 countries that became independent due to the breaking of the Soviet Union,
first is Lithuania, in 1990, then in 1991 goes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
Yugoslavia
editFrom 1991 to 2008, Yugoslavia broke into pieces. First in 1991, Croatia, Slovenia, and Macedonia. A year later Bosnia and Herzegovina became independent. In the year 2006, two countries became independent: Montenegro and Serbia. Lastly in 2008, Kosovo declared independence but it was not widely recognized.
French West Africa

Guinea was established on October 2, 1958.
