Mohammad Natsir (17 July 1908 – 6 February 1993) was an Indonesian politician, scholar, national hero, who served as the 5th Prime Minister of Indonesia from 1950 until 1951. Born in a small village in West Sumatra, he was educated at the Algemene Middelbare School (AMS) in Bandung. Studying Islamic doctrine extensively, he became involved in journalism and published his first articles in 1929. He entered politics in the 1930's, and began rising through the ranks of the Indonesian Islamic Party (PII) prior to the party's banning in 1942. During the Japanese occupation, he joined the Masyumi Party, eventually becoming one of the leaders of the party.
