wikify work.Edit

Whoah, cool! I slapped a {{wikify}} on Centibillionaire earlier today and you were on it in four hours. I'm impressed, especially so with the talk page template. It's good work like this that will make our encyclopedia shine. Cheers. Warrens 23:30, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Political compassEdit

I've seen your version of the political compass userbox and I like it. I have another simpler version on my userpage, could you tell me how to use it to add myself to one of the political compass related categories? Could you help me make it an advanced template like yours (requiring values and stuff).I would rather user my version as I find it moer aesthetic. Will it be possible to add "my" version to Wikipedia:Userboxes/Beliefs?

I have made a rough "draft" of my planned new version to the political compass userbox which can be found at User:Tal642/my sandbox/politicalcompass and is also displayed at my user page. Any comments? Tal :) 09:49, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

שלום Tal! It looks like you've nailed it. :-) All of the code in your draft appears to be working properly, categories and all. Furthermore, it looks much more like the Political Compass article than mine does (mine was designed to match the color scheme of my Myers-Briggs Type Indicator box). As for adding it to Wikipedia:Userboxes/Beliefs, be bold! :-) Hit the edit button and a look at how mine is situated in the table, then simply add it in the same way. If you get stuck, don't hesitate to leave me another message, and I'll help you through it. :-) אמר Steve Caruso (desk/poll) 13:41, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
Just wanted to update you that I took your advice and added a link to the userbox on the Wikipedia:Userboxes/Beliefs. Thanks! Tal :) 15:50, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
Looks good! :-) אמר Steve Caruso (desk/poll) 16:19, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Oh, and one question, am I allowed to move templates on "public" domain (i.e. not on userpages) to my userpage? Is this allowed or recommended? will it prevent them from being deleted? Tal :) 15:53, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Do you mean, any of the belief-based templates in Template: namespace that are slated for removal? If that's the case, I'm sure that it probably won't be a problem, although I'd hunt down their original authors first (check the template edit histories) and collaborate with them. :-) אמר Steve Caruso (desk/poll) 16:19, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

You suggested that I contact you on your talk page regarding the common era situation. Firstly, I have also offered a solution to this dilemma, and I also disagree with the usage of CE/BCE. My solution, which was presented at several venues within Wikipedia, including the Jesus talk page and at pages to request for an alteration in policy, has failed several times. It was to use both systems everywhere on Wikipedia, except to divide their usage. The term "BC" (Before Christ) would be used along with "CE" (Common/Christian Era). Although I think disincluding "AD" (Anno Domini) is not what I would suggest, it is the only answer for a solution everyone would be able to agree with. It is also more POV than "BC". Another positive outcome of this is that "BC" and "CE" both have only 2 digits, "BCE" has three. Please see here for one of the places I requested the alteration. I would also like to hear your ideas. Please respond on my talk page if you would not mind. — `CRAZY`(IN)`SANE` 00:08, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

When I respond, I'll "CC" my talk page with what I've said as well, for convenience sake. :-) The solution that I was working on was to code AD/BC and CE/BCE into templates that can display either, using a Javascript that would allow the user to toggle them back and forth with a click. Next there could be an easy way to set a "default" system via their monobook.js file. Why settle for something half way if it can be both? :-) אמר Steve Caruso (desk/poll) 02:16, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Your kind gesture is very much appreciated, Sharon! Insert-Belltower's AvocateEdit

Hello I'm Aeon and I'm the avocate for User:Insert-Belltower. I see from the AMA request page that Amerique has requested an avocate and that you have taken the user on has his/her Avocate. Insert-Belltower is earnest in his desire to keep this from getting anymore out of hand, and by his comments on the Talk page of UoC Riverside he seems to be trying his best to remain cival and resolve this issue. I have set up a special talk page on my user space to handle the discusion Aeon's AMA discussion page if you wish we can have the conversation elsewhere. Insert-belltower has posted there with his side of the issue. Hope to hear from you soon Aeon Insane Ward 05:37, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Amerique has posted with a very nice and well spelled out list. I have invited Insert-Belltower to do the same. I with oyu I hope we can solve this issue with out going any farther Aeon Insane Ward 20:27, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

The Restorationism article is in terrible shape. Amongst its many problems is a complete lack of citations. Do you have any online resources that you feel might help in a cleanup of that article? Everything from style and form to grammar needs attention; I'm willing to do a chunk of the work in cleanup, but I don't have the source background to do it right. Anything you can direct me towards would be appreciated. Thanks, -Kevin/Last1in 22:02, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Yikes! You're right. I don't have very much time to go over it tonight (as I'm desperately in need of sleep), but the best place to start for web resources is probably The Virtual Religion Index. I've also plopped this article in my Cleanup Taskforce desk and I'll put some work into it in the morning. אמר Steve Caruso (desk/poll) 03:11, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

I was just hoping to get your opinion on the RfC and where you think things fall within this conflict. It turns out that she emailed me a while back requesting Advocacy against someone who was harassing her, then suddenly withdrew her request, only to recently inform me of the RfC. Due to the very small amount of information I was given, and the wad of stuff to sort through from the RfC, and the fact that I was not involved at all with the proceedings, I'm struggling to get a bigger picture of what exactly is going on. Since I saw your John Hancock on the RfC I figure I might as well ask you, someone who has shown themself to be trustworthy. :-) As of now, I'm not even sure if I'm taking the case. אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA) 13:31, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Although my first impulse is to offer myself as your Advocate immediately, I'm not sure it would be profitable as some people, who shall remain anonymous, may cry "conflict of interest." However, seeing that all available Advocates appear to be busy or are pending on hearing cases, I may be the only option. File your request on the WP:AMARQ page and I'm going to have to make some decisions if another Advocate does not step forward. אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA) 23:03, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

and he is still at it. Aeon Insane Ward 01:05, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
May I politely suggest that you re-read the WP policy in question, before you start accusing me of violating this and that. There's a huge difference between letting 2 users know about your actions as I-B's advocate and actively seeking out every article that you edit and jumping in. I really could care less what you do on/off Wikipedia, as long as you don't harm any more individuals by assuming an entrusted role and breaching that trust placed in you. That's all. UCRGrad 01:10, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
UCRGrad, it was by no stretch of anyone's imagination your place to post such a thing. You have been harassing Aeon over this for quite some time now which counts as both stalking and a direct personal attack. This latest spurt of it is merely the straw that breaks the camel's back. Please think about this carefully during your block. We can still work things out and patch back up all of our relationships with one another here at Wikipedia, but before that can happen we need to be willing to work together, not against one another, and disrupting the dispute resolution process with targeted personal attacks which are now expressed as a blockable disruption (which -is- covered by policy) is not the way to do this. אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA) 02:08, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Right now I'm willing to adopt a wait and see approach. If he keeps it the SYSOP that blocked him said to notify him. Thanks Steve. Aeon Insane Ward 17:12, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Advocacy requestEdit

Hi, I am reaching out to you with an odd situation even for Wikipedia. I attempted to edit the article on John Littlechild 1who led the first Special Irish Branch for the UK police and who also investigated the Jack the Ripper and Oscar Wilde cases. I saw that the article only touched on the career points of the subject. I noted that the formation of the Special Branch was opressive to the Irish and that Littlechild has a homophobe for his prosecution of Wilde.

These edits were promptly removed several times by editor Ben W. Bell 2 - a pro British Irishman. The editor Necrothesp 3 -- who authored the article -- also removed various entries. I even reduced the entry to say that the formation of the Special Branch was oppressive to the Irish and nothing more. This too was removed under the excuse that I was offering a POV and not a neutral objective fact.

I was going to get administrators to act as third parties but became intimidated by one simple fact -- on Necrothesp's user page its states that he is a British cop and a member of the U.K. Territorial army. I could go on forever talking about why the British police should not be allowed to edit articles on Northern Ireland but that would be useless. I travel in the UK a great deal and the police have special powers to trace users of any BBS system.

Necrothesp and Ben W. Bell also kept posting on my talk page after I said I felt intimidated. I asked them nicely to leave unitl after the editing conflict wass resolved but they still kept posting. I feel very intimidated. I would like to revise the article with more solid sources but fear being ganged up on again by Necorthesp the cop and his friend Ben W. Bell. In the last entry he made on my talk page Necorthest suggested I leave Wikipedia altogether which is very intimidating coming from someone who is a policeman 4.

I would still like to edit the article but would like you or some other advocate to watch what is being said and done. Please help!

I look forward to hearing from you.

617USA 29 July 2006 (UTC)

617USA, I am unfortunately busy on other cases, so I am not able to help you outmyself. However, I would encourage you to post this on the main Requests for Assistance page and allow me to see if I can find you a suitable Advocate. Right now, most of our Advocates are currently busy on their various cases, so the wait for one appears to be about a week or so, and for that I apologize :-( אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA) 20:14, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

UCRGrad, Insert-Belltower, Aeon issueEdit

The way Aeon presented things to me, I felt a long break was justified, but the fact that other people felt that such a block was not warranted, have lead me to think that Aeon was a bit misleading. I'm just tired of this whole issue, but thank you very much for the update. RyanGerbil10(The people rejoice!) 23:15, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Given my experience with the issue, I would have thought that 3 or 4 days would have been sufficient for him to cool his heels rather than a full week; however, I'm still a bit confused over how other peoples' feelings leads you to the conclusion that Aeon was misleading (in fact I'm not even sure if I know what you mean by "misleading"). אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA) 01:20, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
The issue is getting out of hand, and I don't want to deal with it anymore. The way it went was something like this:
  1. Aeon approaches me on my talk page. Since we are both members of Esperanza, he saw my adminship announcement. He asks for my involvement in an issue where UCRGrad is harrassing Aeon on Aeon's talk page, regarding his conduct in the Insert-Belltower mediation case.
  2. I determine that even though UCRGrad's comments were not presonal attacks per se, they were uncivil, and therefore warranted blocking, because of where UCRGrad posted his concerns (namely, other user talk pages).
  3. I block UCRGrad for one day, later shortening this to six hours. I ask Aeon to give me updates, because I believe Aeon to be the wronged party.
  4. Several days later, Aeon shows me another instance of UCRGrad posting messages concerning Aeon's conduct in the Insert-Belltower mediation case on user talk pages. The instance Aeon presented me with was posted on Insert-Belltower's talk page. Aeon also told me that he had requested that UCRGrad ";eave him alone." Because the meesages are so similar to the messages I issued his first block for, I blocked for one week, for wikistalking.
  5. Insert-Belltower contacts me on my talk page, saying that the message from UCRGrad which Aeon used as evidence to get me to re-block UCRGrad was in fact solicited, and that he and UCRGrad had been discussing the mediation case. Aeon was not involved with the message on Insert-Belltower's talk page at all.
  6. I immediately unblock UCRGrad per Insert-Belltower's request.
Thank you for your time, the list is quite long. Although I would still enjoy updates, I feel that if further admin actions are required, I am too involved in this dispute to act impartially. Thank you, RyanGerbil10(The people rejoice!) 02:07, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

I hardly find it appropriate to put big screaming boxes at the top of usertalk pages. If you want to leave messages, I ask you put them at the bottom of the page under a new heading in plain text. I didn't mean to offend, Ian, I'm simply trying to implement an opt-outable system to communicate between all Advocates without having to post something on every single talk page. The template idea seemed like the best way to do things, as with transclusion, all that need be done is one page change and all tagged pages are updated. User:Joehazelton request for assistance on Peter RoskamEdit

I'd certainly be able to help, but I'm not certain that Joehazelton would think me an appropriate advocate, inasmuch as my userpage contains a (succinct and barely visible) profession to the effect that, even as I'm an anarcholibertarian, I support categorically the Democratic Party of the United States; to the extent that the problems at the Roskam article have devolved from simple content dispute, they seem to be connected to the avowed political views of the contributors. Should Joehazelton nevertheless be comfortable with me—to be sure, as in any other on-WP undertaking, I've no problem elevating encyclopedic neutrality over personal sentiment—I'd be altogether willing to help; shall I write him to query him apropos of this? :) Joe 02:53, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I found out about that because of a post on WP:AN, I think, or maybe it was WP:ANI. I handled it as an admin, not as an advocate, though: I blocked Sarner for personal attacks. I think I shouldn't ever use my admin powers in an AMA request: I understand that role to be advisory, and to compromise your neutrality.. Mangojuicetalk 15:12, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Re closing casesEdit

I'd rather not close it just yet, because the user with whom we are in dispute has gone on Wikibreak, so we'll have to see what happens when he returns. However, if you'd like, I can probably take on another case, since most of mine have died down a bit. --David Mestel(Talk) 06:31, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I am available. / Fred-Chess 11:41, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Re:Talk:Restorationism#Cleanup TimeEdit

What a mess. This is going to take a lot of work. I've nominated the article for AID to see if we can get some help on this. See Wikipedia:Article_Improvement_Drive#Restorationism (1 vote, stays until August 15). Arch O. La Grigory Deepdelver 15:48, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey SteveEdit

Hey Steve since the AMA is so short handed do you wish me to cut my leave short (And before you ask, I don't mind) Æon Insane Ward 23:22, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

I can always use your help Aeon :-) At the moment, enough active Advocates volunteered and the baklog is completely cleaned out, (huzzah!) so your help isn't as desperately needed as it was this morning. :-) I'll keep you posted! (And be sure to alter your status on the new Wikipedia:AMA Members page.) אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA) 16:54, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Roger that you now have an additional Advocate to work with. Æon Insane Ward 17:03, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Would you consider accepting a nomination for adminship? I realise that you haven't got very many edits, but I think that your activities with the AMA prove your suitability for the mop. --David Mestel(Talk) 16:12, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Dave, you nearly killed me as, when reading this, I was taking a sip from my morning tea (which promptly got interesting). :-) I would certainly consider such an honor! :-) A few months ago, I nominated myself and the only thing that held me back on the vote was my edit count (which was a mere 500 at the time) so I withdrew my request, and tried to get myself involved in the Wikipedia community. The general consensus of the vote was that if I were to come back in a few months and try again, most of the people who voted the first time around would support me. Since it has been a few months, I'd be curious to see what people have to say. :-) So, in all, if you were to nominate me, I would surely accept, and be absolutely honored by it. :-) Peace! אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA) 16:31, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
Steve I will Co Nom you if you accept. Æon Insane Ward 16:52, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Nomination for adminshipEdit

Well here we go! Good luck Steve! Æon Insane Ward 19:54, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

WP WikifyEdit

Hi there The Thadman' (Steve?)I know your heavily involved in the wikification drive and have wikified lots of articles - oh and created that cool template. I thought you might be interested in WikiProject Wikify which is a formal WikiProject based on the wikification drive. The idea is to promote the project more than we have previously, set out guidelines to follow when wikifying and provide help and support for contributors. At the moment we are still developing the project page and policies and would value your input and ideas. If you want to join just go to the project page and sign up, then let us know any ideas you have!

Hope to see you there, --Errant Tmorton166(Talk)(Review me) 11:00, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi Steve, thanks for the welcome. For my first case or so I would like to be more of a "second opinion" for other advocates until I get a better feel of the job. I am available for counseling if such a need arrives, though I am not sure the type counseling I have done in the past is needed on Wikipedia, but I am more than willing to assist if needed. Just drop me a note, and until then I will try to research other advocates contributions and the policies of the AMA. Have a great weekend. Kerusso 14:11, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Your RfAEdit

I've added some questions to your RfA. When you have a minute, I'd appreciate if you would take a look at them. Thanks. JoshuaZ 16:32, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

I've responded to them as completely as I could. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'm an open book. :-) אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA/vote for me) 19:38, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Advocacy availabilityEdit

Though I am still officially busy this week, I can take on one (easyish) case. Thanks, Computerjoe's talk 19:51, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Like Joe, I can take an easyish one. Joe 23:18, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I just signed up as a new advocte and and am available. I look forward to helping DPeterson 12:32, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
I can take one, but it probably shouldn't be Carboniate, since I've already chimed in on his talk page. TheronJ 20:23, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

I just recently signed up as an advocate and am willing to accept any case except the one I filed. -Diabolos 23:29, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm taking a WikiBreak. -Diabolos 23:45, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

I am available for advocacy work. WormwoodJagger 11:54, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

I have just signed up as an advocat, and I'm ready to take on a case. -Royalguard11Talk 04:14, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

AMA availabilityEdit

Hi Steve. This is just to confirm that I am available to take AMA cases, and if the position is still vacant, am interested in the position of AMA Coordinator. I have left a message regarding this at Wikipedia:AMA Coordinator. I had previously contacted Michael Snow and he passed me onto you. Wikiwoohoo 23:23, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

I have just seen your note at Wikipedia:AMA Coordinator. Thank you, I will add myself to the nomination list. Wikiwoohoo 23:26, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
Excellent :-) You kinda sneaked onto the membership list without my noticing; I usually try and welcome all new members and see how far along they are with the Advocacy process. :-) Please do add your name to the nominations list, and I believe that have a case that may be appropriate for you so check back on your talkpage soon. :-) אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA/vote for me) 23:30, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your replies. That would be great. I added myself, then checked the Coordinator page to notify them, only to find there currently isn't one! Wikiwoohoo 23:32, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
If it is possible, it would be best to wait one more day since I will be able to give it my full attention then. Would that be a problem? Wikiwoohoo 23:35, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
It shouldn't be a problem. Just drop the user a quick message saying the same and it should be fine. :-) אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA/vote for me) 23:41, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
Just to let you know, I have contacted Zephyrad and am awaiting a response. Your help with all this really has been fantastic, needed to tell you that too! Wikiwoohoo 20:08, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your note and advice. RandomGalen 11:03, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Reportin In!Edit

CyclePat here reporting in for temporary AMA case. Short representation case with only 4 hours a week. Sorry. Only can do part-time. --CyclePat 00:57, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Brain PickEdit

Margana was rejecting consensus as a conspiracy. I had some input towards attempting to find common ground before David asked me to step back. "It's just that in such a sensitive case, I think it's often better to present a united front." The big question is if an admin got drawn into the edit war and blocked while involved. I didn't get involved in that discussion. Margana wanted a RfC but David reccommended against it. That's what I know, but I haven't been staying extremely current.

Oh, I'm ready for a case. Hit me.

RfA resultEdit

I am sorry to inform you that your Request for Adminship (RfA) has failed to reach sufficient consensus for promotion, and has now been delisted and archived. Please do not look upon this outcome as a discouragement, but rather as an opportunity to improve. Try to address the concerns raised during your RfA and, in a few months' time, resubmit your request. Thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia in this capacity! Redux 19:01, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm sorry Steve, but third time will be the charm. Æon Insane Ward 21:12, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Pedant: availableEdit

I have pretty much every case finished. The two 'official ones' are closed... I'm wrapping up an 'off the radar' case, but I'm available as of now. In fact you can pretty much consider me always available unless I get into a deep case, or more than 3 at once. User:Pedant 08:00, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

User UUcp Must Be stopped as an editorEdit

Please review the discussion on UUcp's page and on the Peter Paul, Peter F Paul pages to note that Uucp has a clear political agenda in editing the biography of a man who has become the nemesis of Hillary Clinton. The advocate that has attempted to intercede can not affect Uucp's intent to reedit the Peter F Paul bio page and deface and vandalize it based on his own agenda. he must be locked out of further defaceing the Disambiguity page and the bio page. thanks for your intervention. Assistance with Users FeloniusMonk and KillerChihauhuaEdit

I would like to ask your assistance with Users FeloniusMonk and KillerChihauahua who continually revert the Paul Weyrich biography to language that I feel aims only to make Mr. Weyrich look bad. I have asked them numerous times to cease their vandalism to his biography, and they refuse. I see pure editorialization in their postings, and I have tried to instill fairness into the criticism section by eliminating direct accusations that are mischaracterizations and innuendos at best.

Considering that I have known Mr. Weyrich personally for five years, and I have had innumerable discussions with him regarding the subjects these two users insist upon inserting, I know they are ad hominem attacks. They also take his quotes out of context in what I feel is an effort to smear him.

I included remarks from Mr. Weyrich where he said he would not consider being part of a movement that would transform the United States into another Iranian-style theocracy. They were deleted, and the only reason I can guess is that these two individuals have an agenda to portray Mr. Weyrich as an extremist.-- 21:23, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
