A failed abortion is an attempted abortion in which the embryo or fetus is not terminated and expelled from the body. The failure may result in the fetus being prematurely born alive, the need for another abortion, later miscarriage, later stillbirth, injury to the mother, birth defects on the eventual child, and mental trauma for mother or child.
