The Australian of the Year Award is an award that aims to "acknowledge the contributions of many outstanding Australians" and is presented to Australian citizens. The award ceremony is held on the eve of Australia Day (January 26) in Canberra each year and includes the presentation of three other variant awards: the "of the Year" awards for Young Australians, Senior Australians and Australian Local Heroes. The Australian of the Year Award ceremonies commenced in 1960 when Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet received the award.
Organised by the National Australia Day Council, the Australian of the Year Award is presented to an Australian citizen by the Prime Minister of Australia on the eve of Australia Day at Parliament House in Canberra.
The Award is intended for one individual each year although there have been few exceptions. In 1967, Melbourne-formed band The Seekers received the Australian of the Year Award. The band were recognised for their musical efforts including topping the singles chart with the track "I'll Never Find Another You". In 1993, the National Australia Day Council altered the award dating system, resulting in the award not being given out.
