Grenades in World War 1

Grenades in WW1 were used mostly in the trenches of enemies. The French, German, British, and US all used grenades, but each one they used were different.[1] The French used an F1 grenade. This grenade was very good for dislodging enemies in a trench. The grenade was used by pulling the safety device and throwing it towards a target. And the exterior being ribbed makes the grenade good for holding one-handed. The German used two grenades. The first was the Model 24 Stielhandgranate. This grenade was very helpful to Germans because of its impressive range but it couldn't compare with the Model 1917 Eihandgranate. The Model 1917 Eihandgranate had a much helpful size and weight to be thrown a greater distance. The British had six different types of grenades. The first two were the Grenade, hand no. 6 and Grenade, hand no. 7. The Grenade, hand no. 6 is a concussion grenade meant to shock or stun the enemy. The Grenade, hand no. 7 was a fragmentation grenade made because of how the Grenade, hand no. 6 was limited to only shocking the enemy. The next two the British had were the Mills Grenade and the no. 15 Ball Grenade. The Mills Grenade or the Mills Bomb was used because of its explosion. The explosion would shoot steel fragments out which could also affect the enemy. The no. 15 Ball Grenade was created to change the positions of enemies which was needed during the war. Being in a ball form the no. 15 Ball Grenade was very smooth and spherical. The last two grenades the British invented during war were no. 16 Oval Grenade and the no. 34 Egg Grenade. The no. 16 Oval Grenade was made just to improve upon the no. 15 Ball Grenade. The grenade was a step up because it had a easier to hold size and limited filling size making the fragment of the grenade increased. Finally of the British was the no. 34 Egg Grenade. This grenade was lightweight which made it easier to package and throw. This grenade followed the the Model 1917 Eihandgranate of the Germans. The British invented the most amount of grenades during the WW1. The final country to use grenades was the US. The US used to similar grenades called the MK 1 and the MK 2. The MK 1 was too complex to use during all the chaos during battle so it was recalled by the Americans and the MK 2 was created. It was more commonly known as the Pineapple Grenade because of the pattern of grooved on it. This grenade was a very traditional grenade and like many others it is a fragmentation grenade. There were many weapons used throughout the war but grenades were very helpful to the soldiers and different actions they took.[2]
