Bashir Ahmad Wani , (also known as: Bashir Sogami, born 3rd February 1945, in Sogam,Lolab of district Kupwara), was the only son of Ghulam Nabi Wani Sogami, a legendry politician who was a part of the constituent assembly of Jammu and Kashmir. He is the father of politician Nasir Aslam Wani. Bashir was known to be humble natured and a blissful person who served the people of Lolab with dedication.

Early Life

Bashir was born in an affluent family of Ghulam Nabi Wani and Zainab Begum. Bashir was fondly known as 'Bash' among his relatives, friends and commoners. His grandfather, Mr. Abdul Ahad Wani alias 'Ahadjoo' was one of the first timber merchants of Kashmir, known to be pioneers in starting the lumbering of logs in the valley. Bashir completed his primary education in his native village; Sogam. Later when his family moved to Srinagar, where he studied in D.A.V. School. Later completed his graduation in S.P. College Srinagar.

Business

Bashir joined his family business just after he completed his studies. He was among the top Forest Lessees in Jammu and Kashmir. Bashir being the only son of Ghulam Nabi Sogami was pushed into family business at an early age. His philosophy in business was purely working on merit, he never let his status or political influence come in the way of business dealings. He was highly respected in the business community.

Politics

Bashir Sogami actively worked for the people of Lolab and campaigned for Jammu & Kashmir National Conference party in 1983, 1987 and 1996. He was the 'District Vice President Kupwara' for JKNC

Death

Bashir Ahmad Wani was not keeping well since few months. He passed away on 16th May 2011. The Governor, N N Vohra, condoled the sad demise. He expressed sympathies with Nasir Aslam Wani and other members of the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul. Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, expressed deep grief over the demise. He visited the house of Nasir Aslam Wani stayed with the bereaved family and consoled them. He offered fateha and expressed sorrow over the sad demise. The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Muhammad Akbar Lone, Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand, Minister for Finance, Abdul Rahim Rather, Minister for Rural Development, Ali Muhammad Sagar, Minister for PHE, Taj Mohi-ud-Din, Minister for CA&PD, Qamar Ali Akhoon, Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir, Minister for Revenue and Rehabilitation, Raman Bhalla, Minister for Animal Husbandry, Aga Syed Ruhulla Mehdi, Minister for Social Welfare, Sakina Itoo, Minister for School Education, Peerzada Muhammad Syed, Minister for Forests, Mian Altaf Ahmad, Minister for Tourism, Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister for Industries and Commerce, S S Slathia, Minister for Health Sham Lal Sharma, Minister for Medical Education, R S Chib condoled the demise of Bashir Sogami and expressed solidarity with Nasir Aslam Wani and other members of the bereaved family. Ministers of State, including Dr Manohar Lal Sharma, Ajaz Ahmad Khan, Shabir Ahmad Khan and Javid Ahmad Dar also condoled the demise.

The president of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), Professor Saifuddin Soz, expressed anguish over the sad demise. Soz offered his heartfelt condolences to Nasir Aslam Wani and other members of the bereaved family. Member of Legislative Assembly, M Y Tarigami expressed profound grief over the demise. In a condolence message, Tarigami said that the deceased was a man of principles bearing a good moral character. He prayed for peace to the departed soul and expressed sympathies with Nasir Aslam and his other bereaved family members.

Various departments and organizations have condoled the sad demise. A condolence meeting was held by the senior officers of the JKTDC led by its MD Satish Nehru. The meeting expressed sympathy with bereaved family and prayed for peace to the departed soul. President of Employees’ Joint Action committee (Q) Abdul Qayoom Wani also expressed profound grief and sorrow over the demise and prayed for peace to the deceased.The DG Fire and Emergency Services Dr. G A Bhat condoled the demise and expressed sympathies with the bereaved family. The president of Travel Agents Association of Kashmir (TAAK) Rauf Tramboo and junior vice-president of KHAROF also condoled the demise.
