First-level local government units

edit

For provinces, use [[{province-name}]] wherever possible. If disambiguation is needed, use [[{province-name} (province)]]. Thus Guimaras and Misamis Occidental but Antique (province) and Laguna (province).

For independent cities, i.e, cities that are classified as either highly urbanized cities or independent component cities, use [[{city-name}]] where possible. For example, Baguio and General Santos. In the case of provincial capital independent cities sharing the same name as other non-capital component cities and municipalities in the Philippines, their articles should also go under [[{city-name}]] being the preferred primary topic. For example, Bacolod. [[{city-name} City]] may be used for independent cities sharing the same name as that of a Philippine province or region. For example, Cebu City and Davao City. Similarly, if the independent city was renamed after a person upon cityhood, the same convention may also be used. For example, Lapu-Lapu City. Where disambiguation is needed, use [[{city-name} (Philippine city)]] if sharing the same name as that of a non-Philippine city but with no other city in the Philippines with the same name, e.g, Lucena (Philippine city) or [[{city-name} ({region-name}]] if sharing the same name as that of another city in the Philippines or elsewhere, e.g, Naga (Bicol Region). Exception: use [[{city-name}, {region-name}]] for Metro Manila cities as this is common usage. For example, San Juan, Metro Manila.

Second-level local government units

edit

For component cities, use [[{city-name}]] where possible. For example, Dasmariñas and Victorias. Provincial capital component cities may also use the unqualified name being the preferred primary topic over non-capital Philippine municipalities. For example, Maasin. [[{city-name} City]] may also be used if sharing the same name as that of a Philippine province or region. For example, Masbate City and Surigao City. The same convention applies to component cities renamed after a person upon cityhood. For example, Ozamiz City. Where disambiguation is needed, use [[{city-name}, {province-name}]]. For example: San Fernando, La Union and San Fernando, Pampanga.

For municipalities, the unqualified [[{municipality-name}]] may be used if unambiguous provincial capital or unambiguous first-income class. Otherwise, use [[{municipality-name}, {province-name}]]. Thus Kalibo and Puerto Galera, but Santa Cruz, Laguna and Guiuan, Eastern Samar. Municipalities classified as first-class by the National Statistical Coordination Board (Philippines) can be found here.

Third-level local government units

edit

For barangays, use [[{barangay-name}]] where possible. If disambiguation is required, use [[{barangay-name}, {city/municipalityprovince-name}]]. Thus Fort Bonifacio and Pasonanca, but San Isidro, Tagbilaran and San Isidro, Cabuyao. For central barangays or poblacions, use [[{city/municipality-name} Poblacion]]. For example: Makati Poblacion and Dapa Poblacion.

Islands

edit

For islands, use [[{island-name}]] where possible. If disambiguation is required, use [[{island-name}} (island)]]. Thus Boracay and Mindoro, but Negros (island) and Burias (island). For islands that are more or less coextensive with local government units of the same name, their articles should also go under the unqualified name as merged island-local government unit articles. For example: the island-province of Siquijor, the island-municipality of Sibutu and the island-barangay of Pamilacan.
