Livingston Matthews, known professionally as Pink Siifu, and occasionally iiye[1], is an American rapper and singer from Cincinnati, Ohio and Birmingham, Alabama.

Life and career

edit

Splitting time in his young age between Birmingham, Alabama and Cincinnati, Matthews gained an appreciation for music through his family. His father, a saxophone player, introduced Matthews to classic Jazz, his mother and older brother introduced him to 1990's R&B and hip-hop respectively. Growing up, New Orleans based rapper Lil Wayne became his favorite artist. Learning how to play both the trumpet and drums, he also served as a member of marching bands throughout his youth. Matthews studied acting as a theater major at Wright State University in Fairborn, Ohio, a suburb of Dayton.[2] He would later drop out to focus his attention on a rap career, first doing so in Cincinnati under the name 'Liv Martez', before eventually leaving Cincinnati in 2013 to move to Los Angeles.[3] In 2018, under the name Pink Siifu, Matthews released the LP ensley, named after Ensley, Alabama, a suburb of Birmingham in which his grandmother resided. He followed this release up with the album 'NEGRO' which featured a pivot into punk rap and free jazz territory. Siifu's most recent album GUMBO'! featured his studio album debut alongside artists such as Georgia Anne Muldrow and Nick Hakim, as well as featuring production from Monte Booker, The Alchemist, and many others.[4]

Style and influences

edit

Pink Siifu has been described as having a slow and lackadaisical delivery to his vocals, a quality he has personally attributed to his influences in Mos Def, Lil Wayne, and Outkast. Siifu's output of genres have generally been described as Alternative hip-hop and Neo-soul, but has also experimented with many other genres, such as punk on his 2020 release, 'NEGRO'. Outside of hip-hop, Matthews has listed George Clinton, Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Pixies, Radiohead, and Death Grips as influences.[5]
