Scotch & Soda is a Dutch fashion retail company founded in 1985.

Scotch & Soda, famous for its houtje-touwtje jacket, primarily manufactures premium and upmarket men's clothing, women's clothing under the brand Maison Scotch, boy's clothing under Scotch Shrunk, girls' clothing under Scotch R'Belle, denim and urban products under Amsterdams Blauw and a line of fragrances named Barfly.[2]

History edit

Scotch & Soda began in 1985 as a men's wholesale brand in Netherland only. In 2000, it was bought by Eric Bijlsma, Patrick Munsters and Joep Krouwels, then it rebranded and relaunched a year later by Tom Puik, Mees Puik, and Leonard Buzz. Scotch & Soda was acquired by the brand house Kellwood Stables (an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners) in 2011.

In 2008, Scotch & Soda opened their first two retail stores in Utrecht and Amsterdam. In the beginning, the customer had to put in efforts to find their stores since the stores were located in non-populated areas. However, this "discovery" approach was a very crucial part of their marketing/PR strategy because they did not rely on opening events, but rather using the word of mouth strategy. In 2010, Scotch & Soda opened their very first kid's store at the Wolvenstraat (Amsterdam) selling Scotch Shrunk. Today, the stores are located in more commercial areas. [3]

In the Fall/Winter of 2008, Scotch & Soda incorporated the boy's collection (Scotch Shrunk). This collection had the unique approach of "shrinking" the existing men's styles which no other brands were doing it at the time. In addition, they added the women's collection which was first presented in a boutique/showroom style with only one size per article on the shop floor. However, in 2010, Scotch & Soda expanded the women's line because they became very popular.

In 2010, Scotch & Soda introduced its first fragrance, Barfly. In addition, they began their denim line, Amsterdams Blauw. By 2011, Scotch & Soda opened its first Amsterdams Blauw store and in 2015 they opened the Blauw Kitchen, which is a concept store where denim lovers can immerse themselves in the creative process.

As of 2014 all collections were designed under the Creative Direction of Marlou van Engelen.

As of 2015 Scotch and Soda owned and operated over 204 official stores and are stocked in over 8,000 stores globally.[4]

Branding edit

The name is also stylized as SCOTCH & SODA, or Scotch & Soda.

The collections are best described as 'worldly-cool', incorporating stand-out prints and patterns in each season, which has a theme and story integrated into the collection. The brand is known for its classic styles and prints and detailing. The children's range uses the same prints, patterns and qualities as the main lines for cohesiveness.[citation needed]

The company states its designers work from 'Number 22', Keizersgracht, Amsterdam, a design studio in a former church, in the heart of the city.[citation needed]

Four Scotch & Soda's Brand Values: Authentic Culture, Stories of Discovery, Thoughtful Details, and Liberal Thinking The designers travel the world looking for culture and pop culture. They return home with interesting finds such as artifact, a vintage fabric, a line from a poem, etc... Then, they incorporate these findings on their products to highlight their four brand values. [5]

From 2013 to 2016, Scotch & Soda introduced a sub-line of interior and homeware pieces known as Scotch Collectables. These were unique and second-handed furniture that was restored by Scotch & Soda's global treasure hunters and interior stylists. The Collectables was sold online and also appeared as a temporary store concept around Amsterdam. [6]

In 2015, Scotch & Soda made a significant marketing approach. It began with a short film "The Story of Things" with a lead character named Lola. This movie was played in selected theaters/cities and online. Scotch & Soda established a partnership with Airbnb to promote their brand and movie. Through the partnership with Airbnb, customers had the opportunity to rent Lola's apartment along with Lola's fully styled wardrobe which included many clothes from Scotch & Soda. [7]

In 2016, Scotch & Soda made a debut at New York Fashion week with their style collection presentation. In addition, 2016 was the year of their first brand campaign called "From Amsterdam, From Everywhere." This campaign allowed many key publications including in-store imagery and in digital spaces.
