Writing a Lead Section

edit

Notes from Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section

  • an intro to the article and summary of most important contents
  • clear, accessible style with neutral PoV
  • should stand on its own as a concise (no more than 4 paragraphs) overview of the article's topic. It should
    • identify the topic
    • establish context
    • explain why the topic is notable (in first few sentences)
    • summarize the most important points, including any prominent controversies.

The first sentence:

  • should tell the nonspecialist reader what, or who, the subject is.
  • should be in plain uncluttered English
  • should include (as subject, if possible) the page title, not necessarily verbatim

Need a proper intro:

Next step: External links section. Things to include?

  • books on the topic
  • wikidictionary definition?
