Ravi Chary (Born in Panaji on 26th December 1965) is an Indian sitar player and composer[1][2].

Early Life

He was born to tabla player Pt. Prabhakar Chary. He started learning tabla from his father at the age of four.[3] Later on he moved to Mumbai and began tutoring under the guidance of Padmabhushan Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan. Today, he continues to receive tutelage from Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan.

Career

Ravi has recorded with Trilok Gurtu for his fusion and contemporary jazz albums - The Glimpse, African Fantasy, Beat of Love, Broken Rhythm, Moving Images[4]. He featured on a number of songs produced by Leslie Lewis & Karsh Kale for MTV Coke Studio[5] and also performed with the rock band Zero for the television series – The Dewarists.[6]

Ravi Chary performed in his fusion and contemporary jazz albums like The Glimpse, African Fantasy, Beat of Love, Broken Rhythm, Moving Images where he also collaborated with greats like Salif Keita and Angelique Kidjo, Huun-HuurTu (Tuvan throat singers) and Kim DukSoo (Korean percussionist) as part of a project in a harbor in Denmark led by the Soo (Korean percussionist) as part of a project in a harbor in Denmark led by the inimitable Trilok Gurtu & Norwegian musicians Annbjørg Lien (violin) and Bjorn Ole Rasch (keyboard)[7]. The Grammy nominated album "Miles from India" paid tribute to the world renowned jazz legend Miles Davis[8]. This project was an assimilation of his (Miles Davis) work retold by an ensemble of over thirty musicians. He was awarded by Sharada Vibhushan award by the hands of Padmavibhushan Ustad Zakir Hussain.
