Can This Love Be Translated? (Korean이 사랑 통역 되나요?; lit. Can Love Be Translated) is an an upcoming South Korean web series written by Hong sisters, directed by Yoo Young-eun, and starring Kim Seon-ho and Go Youn-jung. It was produced by Studio Trii, a label of production house Imaginus.[1]

Premise

Can This Love Be Translated? is a heartfelt romantic comedy that revolves around Joo Ho-jin, a skilled multilingual interpreter who becomes the personal interpreter for top actress Cha Moo-hee.[1] Cha Moo-hee and Joo Ho-jin hold contrasting perspectives on love, resulting in misunderstandings.[2] However, as they gradually grow closer, their conversations become increasingly enjoyable, leading to subsequent moments of understanding.[3]

According to news coverage on December 5, 2019, the Hong sisters (Hong Jeong-eun and Hong Mi-ran) were initially preparing a drama with working title 'Can This Person Interpret?' (이 사람 통역이 되나요?) in collaboration with Director Park Jun-hwa [ko] set to be broadcast in cable channel tvN. The working title later revised to 'Interpretation of Salvation' (구원의 통역) and overseas shooting Location is Said to be in China. However, due to the impact of COVID-19, the project faced delays, and no further updates were provided. It is worth noting that the Hong Sisters and Park Joon-hwa later worked together on different drama titled Alchemy of Souls for two seasons in 2021 and 2022.[7]

In 2023, production resumed, and full-scale casting news was announced. The director was changed to Yoo Young-eun, and working title was eventually revised to Can This Love Be Translated (이 사랑 통역 되나요?). Studio Trii took charge of the production.[1] According to Ryu Hyung-jin, the vice president of production house Imaginus, Studio Sot (스튜디오 솥), led by the Hong Sisters and Trii Studio (트리 스튜디오), led by female creators Lee Na-jeong, Lee Yoon-jung, and producer Kim Jin-yi, are both label under Imaginus.[8] The drama is currently in the pre-production phase and aims to be completed by June, 2024, followed by the commencement of actual production.[1]

Casting

In April 2023, it was reported that Actor Son Suk-ku was offered as lead role.[9] However in May of the same year it was reported that he chose other offer.[10][11] In July, 2023, there were talks with Kim Seon-ho and Han So-hee as the lead roles.[12][13] In September, 2023, Go Youn-jung was in talk as female lead.[14] Eventually, Kim Seon-ho and Go Yoon-jung were chosen to play the roles of intrepreter Joo Ho-jin and top actress Cha Moo-hee, respectively.[1]

Filming

Pre-production will be completed in June 2024 and production will begin. The goal is to complete filming around early next year, including overseas locations such as Italy. It is said that production will be handled by Tree Studio, a label under Imaginus.[1]
