Sean Suiter (1974-November 16, 2017) was a Baltimore City Police detective who was killed in the line of duty in November 2017 during an investigation of a 2016 homicide in West Baltimore.
Early life edit
Sean Suiter was born and raised in Washington D.C. and served in the Army prior to becoming an officer. In 2015 he joined the homicide unit after his tenure as a beat officer in Harlem Park.
Timeline of events edit
Suiter was fatally shot in the head with his own service weapon by an unknown assailant, as his partner ducked behind a parked car nearby, in a vacant lot in the 900 block of Bennett Place while attempting to locate a witness in a 2016 triple shooting.[1] He was then rushed to the hospital via squad car due to malfunctioning radios, however the car was hit by another vehicle. The following day, Suiter succumbed to his injuries and police escalated the reward for information to $215,000.[2]
On November 22nd, Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said in a press conference that Suiter was scheduled to testify before a federal grand jury the day after his death in a case against eight officers from the same Gun Trace Task Force Suiter was on, who had been indicted for several charges including racketeering.[3] Following several inquiries from the media and citizens, the Baltimore City Police department adamantly denied any connection between Suiter's impending testimony and his death.
On December 1st, 2017 Davis announced that the investigation would be handled by the FBI going forward and that he had suspended "Officer No. 2" identified as Sgt. Ryan Guinn, who had been named in the Jenkins indictment. [4][5]
In testimony from February 5, 2018, Suiter's former partner, Detective Momodu Gondo, testified that several officers, including Suiter, would take money [from suspects] and split it among themselves. [6][7]
