Pradipta Biswas is an Indian computer scientist. He is an assistant professor at Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing and associate faculty at Robert Bosch Centre for Cyber Physical Systems [1] at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He is one of three co-chairs of the International Telecommunication Union's IRG-AVA - Intersector Rapporteur Group Audiovisual Media Accessibility[2] and Rapporteur of Question 11/9 on Accessibility of ITU Study Group 9[3]. Earlier he was a senior research associate[4] at the University of Cambridge, a working group coordinator at the ITU-T focus group on audio visual media accessibility[5][6] and a vice chairman at the ITU-T focus group on Smart TV[7][8]. He was elected to a Title B1 fellowship[9] at the Wolfson College, Cambridge in 2013. He was a member and later senior treasurer[10] of Cambridge University Revolver and Pistol Club[11] and took part in Cambridge-Oxford varsity shooting matches in 2010[12].

Academic Career

Pradipta graduated with a PhD in Computer Science from the Trinity College and University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory [13]. He received a Gates Cambridge Scholarship[14] in 2006, which is offered to approximately 80 students worldwide each year[15]. He works on eye gaze tracking[16][17], intelligent user interface for inclusive design[18], aircraft cockpit design[19] [20], human robot interaction [21] and automotive user interfaces[22]. Pradipta's research on assistive technology won a $75K award from Facebook Reality Lab in 2021 [23] and Microsoft AI 4 Accessibility grant award in 2018[24]. A new assistive technology involving an eye gaze controlled robotic arm for users with severe speech and motor impairment (SSMI) attracted significant media attention in science magazines like Disability Insider [25], Tech Explore [26] and prominent Indian newspapers [27] [28] [29] [30] and was also broadcasted in NDTV[31], All India Radio[32] and IndiaScience[33] channels. A different application of his research on eye gaze tracking for military aviation applications was featured in New Scientist[34] and was demonstrated at Aero India 2019[35]. He invented an eye gaze and finger movement controlled interactive head up display for cars[36]and proposed algorithms to estimate cognitive load of drivers [37] and pilots [38]. Pradipta's doctoral research on Inclusive User Modelling[39] is considered by W3 [40] [41] and ITU-T for standardization[42].

Pradipta was born and brought up in Kolkata, West Bengal and presently lives in Bangalore.
