editACT 1
editPhysicist Gordon Freeman arrives late for work at the Black Mesa Research Facility. As an NPC security guard grants Gordon access to the facility, Gordon is confronted by a second security guard, Benrey, who asks to see Gordon's passport. Gordon is confused by the request, even more so when Benrey claims that the first guard is angry at Gordon and does not want him in the facility. Gordon attempts to explain that he has his company ID and uniform and doesn't bring his passport to work when Benrey announces that he is going to follow Gordon to protect him from the first guard. To ease the first security guard, Benrey sings a string of blue lights into the NPC's face; when Gordon asks what he saw was, Benrey identifies it as the "Black Mesa Sweet Voice".[note 1] Entering the facility, Gordon is greeted by one of the scientists, who introduces himself as Tommy. Tommy shows Gordon the break room where he likes to read the "billboards" (referring to the bulletin boards) and drink soda for his lunchbreak. Leaving Tommy to his lunchbreak, Gordon passes through the locker room and greets Dr. Coomer. Benrey follows Gordon on his way down to the testing chamber, which Gordon warns about being a radioactive danger for anyone without an HEV suit; Benrey brushes off Gordon's concerns, citing that "[he is] not human", and continues to antagonize Gordon at the elevator. After Gordon points out several NPCs that are not afraid of him, contrary to what Benrey says, Bubby interrupts to tell Benrey that he is not allowed in the room without a hazard suit. Benrey explains that he has his ID, appeasing Bubby, and the two question Gordon on his passport.
Briefly losing Benrey, Gordon enters the test chamber only to find Benrey ahead of him, and Dr. Coomer and Tommy overseeing the test. Gordon attempts to conduct the test, all while Benrey suspects him for stealing company property. After pushing a sample of an unusual material into a laser, the machinery explodes, creating a "resonance cascade" that sends the facility into disarray. Regaining consciousness, Gordon finds Bubby outside of the destroyed test chamber, and the two argue over whether the incident was Gordon or Benrey's fault, the latter of which approaches unharmed. Tommy appears to warn the group of creatures, that being a headcrab. Benrey kills the headcrab with an Energy Orb,[note 2] prompting Gordon to ask what Black Mesa is arming its guards with. Benrey identifies his pulse-rifle as a passport, and proceeds to set a scientist NPC on fire because "they didn't have their passport." Bubby hesitantly tells Gordon his name, to which the latter doubts to be real. Gordon finds Dr. Coomer in the observation room over looking the test chamber (standing dangerously close to an arc of electricity jutting from the broken machinery). Fixing a computer terminal, Coomer informs Gordon that communication systems are down throughout all of Black Mesa.
Heading to the surface, Gordon asks Drs. Bubby, Coomer, and Tommy on whether any of them has left Black Mesa without use of the facility's tram system; Bubby states that he was born in facility and has never left it, surprising Gordon with the fact that "Black Mesa does test tube babies". Benrey produces a blue-magenta trail using the Black Mesa Sweet Voice, and Tommy reveals that he can read trails made using the Sweet Voice. Upon Gordon's attempt to call an elevator, the lift breaks, plummeting three scientist NPCs down the elevator shaft much to Gordon's horror. Coomer and Bubby berate Gordon as a murderer, blaming him for the deaths of the elevator's occupants. Finding a break room, Gordon breaks open the vending machines, and the other characters consume all of the soda. Reaching the locker room from before, Gordon finds in his locker his passport and a photograph of his son, Joshua.

After composing himself, Gordon questions the rest of the team on their ability to use guns, repeatedly getting interrupted by Benrey shooting pigeons and, at one point, setting Dr. Bubby on fire. Continuing to a broken catwalk, Benrey splits off from the group by falling to a second platform below; the science team refuse to follow him and continue to a room with barnacle enemies, the dangling tongues of which Dr. Coomer identifies as ropes. After a jumping puzzle, Dr. Coomer attributes his athletic prowess to his PowerLegs, and makes mention of a "super player feature". Tommy instinctally
