David (Dave) Karl is an American biological oceanographer and the Victor and Peggy Brandstrom Pavel Professor of Microbial Oceanography at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His work focuses on the cycling of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus in the ocean, the capture of sunlight, and the sinking (export) flux of material to the deep sea.

He attended SUNY Buffalo as an undergraduate, graduating magna cum laude in biology, earned a Masters Degree in biological oceanography from Florida State University and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at UC San Diego.^[1]

Career and Research edit

Dr. Karl did early work on the bacterial communities of undersea hydrothermal vents^[2] and was one of the first to observe and sample these communities from a submersible^[3], and helped reveal the microbial food webs in the waters around Antarctica^[4]. He was one of the initiators of the Hawaii Ocean Time-series^[5], and has continued to work on changes in biogeochemical processes and decadal scale changes in ocean ecosystems. Karl is currently the director of C-MORE.

Awards and honors edit

He is a recipient of many awards in his field, including the G. Evelyn Hutchinson Medal, the A. G. Huntsman Medal, the Henry Bryant Bigelow Medal, and the Alexander Agassiz Medal^[6]. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and American Academy of Microbiology. He was part of a group awarded the Cozzarelli Prize in 2009, by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.^[7] In 2015, he was awarded the Balzan Prize for "his research on microorganisms and phytoplankton and their roles in the oceanic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous cycles"^[8].
